Week 1 May
Friday 7th May
Another busy week at Livingstone! Our catch -up interventions have started in the mainstream classes and Saturday School for Yrs 4 and 5 pupils begins tomorrow. In school, the teachers have had training in Maths and on challenging the More Able pupils with their reasoning skills. It was very nice that two school governors also attended the training to see what we are implementing. Despite being tired, the pupils are well settled and are producing some very impressive work. It has been very pleasing to see how well all of the children are settling into routines.
Parent consultations also took place this week. We still have some families who have not made appointments. If you have not yet been able to make an appointment, then please contact the school office so that their class teacher can contact you about your child's attainment and progress.
Forest School Donations
Diane and Mr Sudbury are working on improving the pond area for Forest School. Donations of any of the following items would be gratefully received:
outside ornaments
unwanted pots
trellis
unused pebbles
logs (if anyone knows a tree surgeon or a gardener that could donate them)
Many thanks in advance!
Nursery
Raffi has loved playing with the toy airport this week. He has made lots of little cars in the airport car park with his yellow bricks - and, here he is making an area for small aircrafts. Well done Raffi!
The girls are placing the plastic fish on the ocean book. They can match all the sea creatures to the right images and name them too. Great work!
Well done to Raffi for outstanding work this week.
Reception
This week Reception welcomed baby caterpillars! We are continuing our topic on Life Cycles and exploring what a caterpillar needs to grow and how it goes through the process of metamorphosis. The children have created caterpillars out of a variety of materials, labelled the parts of a caterpillar and counted pompoms for our caterpillars' abdomens. Well done on another fantastic week, Reception.
The first achievement award goes to Kigen for his incredible progress across all areas of learning and his fantastic 'superhero rolls' in gymnastics.
The second achievement award goes to Orla for her excellent independent writing all about caterpillars and healthy food.
Year 1
Year 1 have started PSHE learning about Health and Wellbeing. The children have learned that a healthy balanced diet, exercising regularly, maintaining good personal hygiene, getting plenty of sleep and feeling good is what keeps our bodies healthy. All the children were very knowledgeable on the subject and even came up with their own healthy tips: walking, picnics and dancing!
This week’s achievement awards go to Taha for challenging himself to work independently and to Holly for her fantastic counting in 5s in Maths.
Year 2
Year 2
This week in Maths Year 2 have been problem solving with addition. We used Lego to build anything to the value of 32 using lots of different Lego pieces. We explored how many ways we could make 32 in different ways using addition and some of us started using multiplication as well.
In Science, we are learning about animals including humans. We have been looking at how our heart rate changes when we exercise and why it is important to stay healthy. We did some exercise and checked our pulse rates and discussed what happened. We also have some caterpillars in our class as we are observing what happens every week to the caterpillars! We will keep you all updated!
This week our first achievement goes to Elia for her fantastic language used during English retelling the story Mrs Armitage on wheels.
The second achievement goes to Ravi for his excellent problem solving in Maths using his addition and multiplication.
Kingfisher 1
Kingfisher 1 have had another great week!
In English, we have been looking at 'The Mixed-Up Chameleon' by Eric Carle as we continue our author study. Pupils have explored the colour-changing, camouflaging chameleon and we discussed how in the end it's better to be ourselves!
In Maths, we have been working on subtracting with different resources. We have also been looking at the inverse of number sentences by working on fact families.
This week's Kingfisher 1 award goes to Calvin for excellent work in English, expanding his sentences by adding adjectives and conjunctions! Brilliant work Calvin!
Year 3
Year 3 have started Geography and we are learning about hills and mountains. We have become quite the map explorers as we have been using atlases and digital mapping to locate the UK mountain summits along with famous mountain ranges around the world.
In English, we have begun writing our diary entries as Gregory based on our class book. We love writing!
This week's awards go to Arbel for her lovely informal/diary language and Marwa for extending her sentences to add more descriptive detail.
Year 4
Year 4 have been learning about money in Maths this week. We have focused on counting, comparing, ordering and estimating amounts, an important skill for the future. In English, we have continued to explore Greek myths with a particular focus on selecting powerful and precise vocabulary to engage our reader. We have also started our new D&T project where will be designing and making our own moving mythical creatures using pneumatic systems. They have all been excellent this week; we are extremely proud of them!
This week's achievement awards go to Evie for her fantastic use of fronted adverbials in her writing, and to Katerina for her positive and hard-working attitude. Well done!
Year 5
This week, Year 5 completed their writing task where they had to write two romantic love letters between two characters in The Highwayman - some of them were even challenged to write as two different love interests. The children did very well with their writing.
In Maths, we have been looking at percentages and their fraction and decimal equivalents. The children now know that per cent means per 100, and to find a percentage, they should convert a fraction into hundredths. Most of them applied their knowledge to some difficult problems, and impressed us with their resilience and determination.
We've moved on to History now and have begun our new topic, The Tudors. We'll be focusing on Elizabeth I - the last Tudor monarch - and the important events and values she had during her reign as queen of England. However, we now have our class caterpillars so we will watch their life cycle progress over the next few weeks to consolidate our learning in Science.
This week's awards go to Chloe for getting more work finished in lessons and working independently, and to Victor for the excellent characters he portrayed in his Highwayman letters - well done, you two!
Kingfisher 2
What a fabulous week we have had in Kingfisher 2! All the pupils have been working really hard on their lessons and their behaviour.
In Maths this week we have been exploring position and direction. This has involved a bus ride, a trip to the shops, the seaside and a treasure hunt, all without leaving the classroom.
In English we have started a new topic of non- chronological reports. The children have been looking at reports about pets and other animals. They already have a lot of great knowledge!
This week's achievement award goes to Jack. Excellent news writing and editing, well done

The children in Nightingales have been working very hard this week.
In Maths, we have been learning about addition. We are very good at using physical resources and have started learning mental methods to calculate.
