May Week 1

Athletics Competition

R0NZSlub5OG3kb

Friday 6th May

Last week, children from Years 5 and 6 represented our school at an athletics competition where we competed against seven other teams. Each child had to take part in four different sporting activities: 80 m sprint, 600 m run, vortex throw and long jump. The children worked hard to complete each activity to the best of their ability to collect points for our team. All of the scores were tallied together and we proudly placed 5th. It was a great day out and it gave the children a taste of athletics! Well done to Zeynep, Hattie, Lois, Katerina, Qamazarda, Alex, Zach and Mattero.

Barnet Education Arts Trust (BEAT) provides music education to children and young people within the London Borough of Barnet. BEAT is committed to ensuring that all our activities are inclusive and accessible, and we invite you to contribute to our first ever inclusion survey which focuses on out of school activities on weekday nights and Saturday mornings. We want to hear from any young person or parent/carer of a young person aged 3-21 in Barnet whether you currently use or used to use one of our groups, or have never been to a BEAT activity or even heard of us.

Click on the link below to take the survey, which will take 5-10 minutes and could really help us improve the services we provide.

Nursery

This week in Nursery we have been planting cress seeds and talking about germination. We have also been examining lots of other seeds from exotic fruits. The children were fascinated with all the seeds in the pomegranate! Lots of the children went on to draw their favourite seeds and make up some of their own too!

Kingfisher Nursery

What another exciting week in Kingfisher Nursery! As we continue our exploration on Spring Growth, we focused on seeds and where they come from. We used our senses to explore the smell, taste and texture of the different fruits and vegetables before using them to stamp. We worked hard on using our communication boards to make requests on the fruit/vegetable we wanted and the colour paint to stamp with. We also looked at the cress seeds we planted last week and discussed the changes from previous days.

Well done for a lovely week, Kingfisher Nursery. We look forward to another exciting week!

Reception

We are being very patient in Reception class, watching our tadpoles for any changes that may happen soon! We are beginning to understand growing and plant life cycles. We read the story 'Jody's Beans' and were so excited when Mr Sudbury said that we could use part of the allotment to make our own wigwam to grow some runner beans, inspired by Jody. We have spent time preparing the soil, pulling weeds and turning it over. It was hard work in the words of Filip: 'I just love gardening!

Jack - for always being well behaved and polite.

Ruby - for some fantastic writing this week, even beginning to understand how to edit and improve her work.

Year 1

Another busy week has been had in Year 1 this week. In Maths, the children have been learning how to make equal groups of 2s, 5s, and 10s out of various amounts given. In English, we have begun our new text focus ‘Look Up’. The children have enjoyed creating their own flyer's inviting people to watch the next meteor shower; as well as writing letters in reply to the main character ‘Rocket’ to make her feel better about missing the meteor shower. We have reached the end of our Art topic on plants and had a great time learning about Van Gogh and Andy Goldsworthy. Their paintings and natural art sculptures where fabulous!

This week's awards go to Oliver for his positive attitude and challenging himself in all lessons and to Lacey for being brave when faced with new challenges.

Year 2

A short but productive week in Year 2! We have now finished our re-invention of our own Traction Man mission where all children used imaginative problems and solutions. We have started our new Art topic about plants. We used paint to do shades and tints on swatches and colour wheels as well as oil pastels. We are continuing with Measurement in Maths, measuring and comparing weight in kg and temperature in degrees Celsius.

Also, Year 2 spent an incredibly fun afternoon at East Barnet School doing various P.E. activities.

If your child would rather not, then they need to be in school on time as we will be starting the tests each day, promptly, at 9 am.

Have a restful weekend and please reassure your children that the SATs are nothing to worry about and they are ready for them.
