We wish all our pupils a happy Eid and hope they have a wonderful time celebrating the end of Ramadan with their family and friends.

Dunelm Community Competition Update

0YzZoJOAP0f8oF

We just missed out again to winning another Dunelm competition! This time they were offering key worker organisations the chance to win a £40 gift card to spruce up their staff rooms.

Our parents/carers decided to take the matter into their own hands and raised an incredible £560 towards the upgrade of our staff room to compensate for the near miss. It is not often that our staff are made speechless but Mr Madle, who was presented with Amazon tokens, and every member of staff were overwhelmed by the incredibly generous donation. We still have no idea how they managed it but from the bottom or our hearts - thank you to everyone who contributed to the amazing gift. You never know, we might even be able to afford gold wallpaper unlike our Prime Minister!

SUMMARY OF POINTS ADDRESSED AT THE MEETING

Yr 2

  • Parents have asked for more after school clubs including KS1 Yoga.
  • We are looking into the possibility of re-starting Spanish Club. Clubs have been affected by restrictions, but as they are lifted, more will be added but this is subject to viability. Miss Papas has spoken to Mrs Kelly about Spanish classes.
  • The demand for football is big so school will be adding extra session and adding an extra adult. School is doing their best and if there is a demand and costs can be covered, more clubs will be added in second summer term.
  • A Year 2 parent has asked, “could you suggest it may be better in future to have parent consultations before catch up / booster letters are given out. Not sure whether this is usually the case, or just because of Covid but feel it would have been nice to have discussed progress before receiving letters.”

Assessments have been done and the differential between where children should be, and are, is very small in most cases and we are very pleased that the children have continued to make progress, so the option we have decided on, is a little often. After consultations catch up will start. Yr 2 has started early and that is only due to time constraints on trying to get all the learning covered. There will be after-school catch-up for 20 minutes and Saturday School will re- start.

Yr 5 and KF

  • A parent has asked if any trips will be happening this term as they have all had such a tough year and a trip might be really good for them.
  • On a similar note,.... will the Isle of Wight trip be going ahead for Yr 6 next year?

We are introducing trips one at a time. PGL will be going ahead. We are in talks and may change location for PGL as costs have gone up. Zoe has a friend who has a residential centre that school may be interested in – woodrowhighhouse.org

We are hoping that Yr 4 camp night will go ahead but not sleeping over , staying in school till ten so children can enjoy the experience. Paris can't go ahead. Anything we can do will go ahead .

Yr 3

  • Positive comment -Good communications with regards to clubs - what to wear, where to pick up etc.
  • It was sensible to stagger the end of term finish times in March.
  • A little unsure of where to pick up from cabin club sometimes (now that KS1 and KS2 are separate)

If parents are unsure they must ask and will be redirected to right location. KS1 and KS2 are separate bubbles once restrictions have been modified we will bring them back together again. It can be tricky but school are trying to keep on top of it.

  • When will swimming lessons start again?

Until end of term, Yr6 will be going swimming. In September Yr3 and 4 will start

  • Will there be class photos this Summer term?

Is it possible for more tables to be put out for lunchtime when kids are eating outside as some children are saying they are having to balance their lunches on their laps sitting on chairs as there aren’t enough tables for everyone.

  • More tables have been put outside for children to eat on when weather is nice. If a seat is not available at table and children don’t want to have lunches on their laps children have been told to stagger their lunches and play first and when a seat is available to eat.

Nurser

Phoebe has been rolling a dice and then counting out the right number of linking elephants. How clever, Phoebe! She knows all the colours too. Well done, Phoebe!

We have been reading the story of The Very Hungry Caterpillar. The Nursery children know the life cycle of the butterfly. Filip has decided to paint one of the foods from the story - "It's a gherkin", says Filip. We will make sure it is part of our display. Well done, Filip!

Reception

We continue to explore life cycles in Reception. Miss Knappett brought in frog spawn to our pond, and we looked closely at the living creatures thriving there. (We saw Frogs and Newts!) In class, we have been busy writing about the changes in our caterpillars, creating collages in the style of Eric Carle and writing facts about these creatures. In maths, we enjoyed finding different ways to make numbers to 20 using a variety of resources. The children continue to amaze us with their knowledge and enthusiasm.

This week’s achievement awards go to Dexter for his excellent understanding of number and Denis for his beautiful Eric Carle style collage.

Year 1

On Wednesday as part of Creative Curriculum, Year 1 excelled themselves in Gymnastics. They had to create team routines, practise their balancing skills and exit stances. They all performed incredibly well showing passion, commitment and true flair for the discipline. Well done , a perfect 10 for Year 1! Who knows, maybe the next Olympic champion is hiding in Year 1...

In Maths, Year 1 have started working on Multiplication and Division. They have been learning about identifying equal groups before moving on to repeated addition as an introduction to the concept of multiplication. They have learnt how to use correct mathematical vocabulary to explain their investigations. Next step arrays!

This week’s awards go to Kevin for trying really hard in Phonics and showing a positive attitude to learning and to Scarlett for her great contributions to our R.E. discussions.

Year 2

This week we have finished our retelling of the story Mrs Armitage on Wheels. We have worked so hard on our stories and are all very proud of our work. We really enjoyed this book. We have spent some days this week publishing our stories and working very hard on our joined up writing.

In Maths, we have been using balancing scales and weighing scales to measure mass. We found lots of items around the class to weigh and predicted which would be the heaviest before weighing. We have then been working on reading scales and being accurate in when we draw onto a scale.

Our caterpillars have been growing a lot this week and most have now reached the top of the lid. We think next week they will start to form into chrysalis'. We will keep you updated!

This week our first award goes to Cyrus for his fantastic effort in his maths problem solving.

Our second award goes to Lewis for pushing himself in his writing, using wonderful vocabulary to extend his sentences.

Kingfisher 1

Kingfisher have had another great week!

In English, we have been exploring another Eric Carle story, 'Draw Me a Star'. Pupils enjoyed becoming the artist from the story by drawing and colouring their own star with water colour paints.

In Maths, we have been looking at fractions. We have been working on how many parts are needed to make a whole when working with proper fractions. Pupils enjoyed making their own fraction sandwiches.

This week's Kingfisher 1 award goes to Lacey for excellent learning in Kingfisher and Reception!

Year 3

We have finally finished our diary entries! The children have worked extremely hard to include lots of informal language, emotive language and conjunctions. Well done, Y3!

Our Geography topic about Hills and Mountains has come to end and the children have thoroughly enjoyed learning about the human and physical features. On Tuesday, we went on a local walk to construct map of our area. We have become quite the navigators! Click on the pictures to look at more work linked to maps and mountains.

This week's rewards go to Xander for his outstanding knowledge about hills and mountains and Emily for a detailed diary entry.

Year 4

This week, Year 4 have been planning to write their own myths by selecting a new mythological creature, setting and problem that their hero must resolve. It's fair to say that they are beyond excited to get writing next week!

In Maths, we have spent the week looking at adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing, with a focus on giving change.

In D&T, we have finally finished creating our moving mythological creature; they can't wait to take them home next week and show you all!

This week's achievement awards go to Josh for his brilliant work in D&T and to Despina for challenging herself in maths and English.

Year 5

This week, Year 5 have been practising the grammar needed in a narrative to make it descriptive and interesting; they've done brilliantly with punctuating direct speech and writing complex sentences with subordinate clauses in different positions.

In Maths, they have spent the week adding and subtracting decimals - with great success!

The biggest achievement has been in History, where we're learning about the Elizabethan era of the Tudor reign. The children have been so enthusiastic! They've learned about crime and punishment; the rivalry between Elizabeth I and Mary, Queen of Scots; and about the Spanish Armada.

This week's awards go to Maisie for her effort and focus in all lessons and in catch-up club, and to Noah for challenging himself to start with Spicy tasks. Well done!

Kingfisher 2

Kingfisher 2 have had another busy and productive week.

Continuing their work on position and direction in maths the children have been identifying and plotting coordinates. They have been translating shapes and describing their movement.

In English we are continuing to look at non- chronological reports and their features. The children have learnt a lot about the genre and about different animals.

We also have visitors to the classroom this week, some small and very hungry caterpillars!

The achievement award this week goes to Nathan for his very positive attitude on Creative Curriculum Day.

Nightingales

The children in Nightingales have been working well this week.

In English, they have continued to work on the book 'The Tiger Who Came to Tea' and have planned and written a letter to the tiger who left the family without any food or drink left in the house.

In Maths, they have been learning about subtraction and using physical resources and drawings to show their understanding.

This week our achievement award goes to Jacob. He worked hard on his Maths' subtraction and was able to subtract 3-digit numbers and 1 digit numbers independently. Well done Jacob!

Year 6

This week, Year 6 have become real-life scientists and dissected sheep's hearts. We did this as part of our Science unit, 'Animals including Humans' where we have been learning all about the circulatory system and the role of the heart. We identified the different parts of the heart (such as the aorta, superior vena cava, the heartstrings and atriums). We would like to say a big thank you to Mrs Snell, our Science co-ordinator, for leading the sessions!

6B Achievement Awards

This week's first achievement award goes to Derman for always working hard and having a positive attitude towards his learning.

The second achievement award goes to Nathan for always trying his best and his excellent effort in our Dance Festival dance.

6S Achievement Awards

This week's achievement award goes to Geenuka for working incredibly hard on his long write this week.

The second achievement award goes to Adon for his excellent focus and dedication in dance lessons.

6L Achievement Awards

This week's achievement award goes to Maya for the lovely first draft she did for her diary writing.
