January Week 3
Friday 23rd January
Secretary of State for Education
Here is an extract from letter sent to all schools who have been identified as making a significant impact on pupil outcomes.
Dear Giovanna,
Congratulations to you and your team on the excellent outcomes the disadvantaged pupils at Livingstone Primary and Nursery School achieved at the end of the 2024/25 academic year. Your school’s performance places it among the very best nationally, and this is a significant achievement.
This success reflects the dedication of your staff and the hard work of your pupils. It shows what can be achieved when ambition and commitment come together. Thank you for everything you do to give children the best possible opportunities to succeed.
Your school’s achievements demonstrate what is possible, and I hope you will continue to share your experience and best practice with others. Even the strongest schools can go further. We encourage you to lead the way as a system leader - sharing effective practice, championing networks, supporting collaboration, and helping raise standards across the sector........

Please Park Considerately
We are still receiving complaints from residents about cars blocking driveways during drop‑off and collection times. Please ensure you park safely and respectfully to help us maintain positive relationships with our community.
Barnet Council have been notified and traffic wardens may be patrolling and issuing parking tickets in the forthcoming weeks.
PTA AGM
Thank you to all the parents and carers who attended the AGM on Zoom on Tuesday. We re‑elected all our committee members, and our co‑chairs shared updates on the many events held last year and the fantastic amount of money raised. So far, the majority of funds have been used to upgrade the playgrounds and outdoor areas, and we will continue reviewing all our spaces to identify further improvements that will enhance the school grounds for the benefit of all our children.
Nursery
This week we continued exploring traditional tales, focusing on The Gingerbread Man. The children loved bringing the story to life through baking delicious ginger muffins and strengthening their fine motor skills with ginger-scented playdough.
With the weather being wet and muddy, it was the perfect time to get creative in our mud kitchen, where the children enjoyed making their own “recipes.”
We’ve also been working hard on early maths, practising 1- to-1 correspondence up to 5 and 10, and building confidence through counting games. Our week was filled with storytime and singing, especially the much-loved 5 Gingerbread Men song.
Next week, we will continue our traditional tales theme with Goldilocks and the Three Bears. We’re excited to explore the story through role play, sensory activities, and more fun learning experiences.
If you can, please sign up for Mystery Reader! Tuesdays at 2:30pm or for any other time please speak to a member of the Nursery team. Thank you!
Talking Homework
You might like to try some of these simple talking activities at home:
- Talk about The Gingerbread Man: Who were the characters? What happened at the beginning, middle, and end?
- Sing the 5 Gingerbread Men song together and encourage your child to join in with actions or repeated phrases.
- Count everyday objects together (snacks, steps, toys) up to 5 or 10, encouraging one-to-one counting.
- While cooking or baking at home, talk about ingredients and let your child help stir, pour, or count spoonfuls.
- Ask your child what they would cook in a mud kitchen or what recipe they would make for the Three Bears.
Kingfisher Early Years & Nurture
This week in Kingfisher we have continued with The Gingerbread Man. The children have enjoyed the different versions of the story and have been sequencing the events using pictures and sound buttons. They have had a go at making their own Gingerbread people and gingerbread play dough.
In Bluebirds we have been reading the traditional tale, Little Red Riding Hood. Our Fun with food activities have been making healthy snack jewellery and oat biscuits for Little Red Riding Hood to take to Granny.
Both classes have a new sensory story this week, We're Going on a Bear Hunt.
The Makaton Nursery rhyme of the week is 5 Little Penguins - youtube.com/watch?v=PXf77YM5PrM
Reception
The children have continued to enjoy our ‘Naughty Bus’ theme this week. They received their very own set of toy buses which they have been role playing as naughty and nice! They have been junk modelling and painting their own buses, looking at more and less in maths using passengers on the bus, and modelling buses using playdough.
The children were so interested to look at what buses look like around the world and we have loved looking at how London buses have changed over the years. Ask your children about buses in the past and see what they tell you!

Year 1 love the Mr Men and Little Miss stories, so our next piece of writing in English will be to create our very own character.
