June Week 3

Friday 18th June

SchoLy UK

You will notice that there is something a little different in this week's newsletter....

We are pleased to be working in collaboration with SchoLy Uk, a company co-founded by one of our parents, Paul Demetriades. The aim of the company is to support local businesses and schools through advertising.

Once every half of a term, our families will be able to see what local businesses are providing and take advantage of generous discounts on offer. The idea is to help businesses, within our local area, generate more interest and income; and for some, help build their businesses back up following the struggles endured due to the pandemic. For us as a school, the adverts will provide funding to areas of Livingstone life that our pupils will be able to benefit from.

If any of our families who are running their own business would like to create awareness of their brand, products, services and/or ideas, contact info@scholy.co.uk. You may even work for a company who would be interested in advertising.

Read on to see what offer is included this week!

COVID-19

Unfortunately, we had two positive cases of COVID in school since re-opening after half term and have had to close two classes. We hope the the two children and their families recover quickly.

Home learning has now been re-started for these children and any family who needs access to a laptop, please contact the office.

Please be vigilant if your child is showing any of the symptoms and keep them off school as an extra precaution. We would be grateful if you continue to wear your masks when you enter the school premises and please keep your distance from other families in the playground and outside the school gates.

Provision for More Able Writers

This week, our intervention for more able writers in Years 5 and 6 has begun. We will be focusing on the sinister short film 'Alma' this term. The children brought their creativity, energy and skills to the session and worked as a team to develop their language and phrasing. Here are a couple of highlights. 'An evil wind chilled her to the bone and spread fear through her veins'. 'Her fate was set in stone the second she saw the doll's soulless smile.'

We are already very impressed by this talented group and look forward to their future pieces of writing.

UKMT Maths Challenge

This year a selection of our more able mathematicians from Year 6 took part in a nationwide competition testing their problem solving skills. The paper was very challenging and was open to entrants from Year 8 and below. We want to congratulate all of the children who took part and performed amazingly well: Advay, Adya, Jahsh, Kalo, Lillie and Nikhil. We are incredibly proud of their skill and effort.

A special congratulations to Advay and Adya who qualified for the next round of challenges. They sat their second paper this week and we are eagerly awaiting the results

Nursery

We have raised some Painted Lady Butterflies in the Nursery and the children have learnt all about the butterfly life cycle. Yesterday, we took our butterflies to a special place in Hadley Wood where we know there are lots of food plants and nectar for the butterflies to enjoy. Isaac and Sonny were so careful as they released them to the wild. Good luck, butterflies!

Reception

Reception have shown amazing resilience and positivity towards our home learning on the VLE and during the daily Zooms this week. They enjoyed continuing our firefighter topic and learning about capacity. Creative Wednesday was fun too as we made cards for people we love and remembered how to help around the house: making our beds, tidying our rooms, preparing dinner and washing up too. Thank you to all of the parents for your support during our isolation period; it is very much appreciated. We look forward to being back in Reception class on Tuesday!

This week's first achievement awards goes to Orla for her excellent discussion with her mum all about the capacity of different shaped containers. The second achievement award goes to Lola for her super star- enthusiasm for all aspects of home learning.

Year 1

Year 1 have had a brilliant week and have been earning more marbles as their whole class behaviour and effort has been impressive! We are finishing our last Science topic on the seasons and are starting to spot the changes from Spring to Summer. We enjoyed making 3D trees which show each season and how trees can change, we also applied our Maths knowledge on halving when we made them. During Creative Curriculum the children are displaying fantastic knowledge about healthy eating and each week some children will get the chance to make yummy pizzas. When the chefs came back this week the whole classroom was filled with lovely smells!

Great work Year 1!

This week's awards go to:

Alex for outstanding improvements in fine motor skills. Well done for fantastic cutting skills Alex!

Anwen for determination and working hard in 'on fire' tasks in Maths this week - you are a fractions superstar!

Year 2

As part of our hydroponics farm in the classroom that we set up last week, we have all been watching our bean plants germinate and start to grow in their bags. It has been fascinating to see! Some partner groups have got many seeds germinating and we have even had one bean grow many roots and a shoot. In science, we have also set up another experiment investigating how plants grow in different places and without as much water. We have six groups of plants in different places, one in direct sunlight, one in the dark cupboard, one in the fridge, one in a warm place, one with no water and one with too much water. We are going to observe and see how each group's cress grows.

We have started a new unit of art based on plant art and this week we have been experimenting with primary and secondary colours creating shades and tints. We were adding white to our colours and black to make the shades, which we found quite tricky.

In English, we have been writing our stories of the snail and the whale. We have been using lots of description in our writing and we are looking forward to publishing these next week in our writing folders!

This week our achievement awards go to:

Abdullah, for his fantastic writing using wonderful description in his retell of the snail and the whale.

Muthara, for her excellent art work exploring shades and tints very carefully. Well done!

Kingfisher 1

Kingfisher 1 have had a lovely week in the sun!

In English, we have been reading 'Mog the Forgetful Cat'. Pupils have been sequencing key events in the story using colourful semantics, as well as identifying the development of characters' emotions throughout the story. Pupils also enjoyed using character props to re-tell the story.

In Maths, pupils have worked really well to work out addition and subtraction calculations using a number line. Pupils used their knowledge of how to use a number line to find missing numbers in a calculation and prove their answers to problem solving questions.

This week the Kingfisher 1 achievement award goes to Georgie for her brilliant work ethic in Maths! She worked really well to learn how to use a number line to prove her answer in subtraction problem solving questions.

Year 3

In English, we have started reading, James and the Giant Peach written by one of our favourite authors. We are preparing ourselves to write a newspaper article and have spent the week reading newspaper articles to understand its features.

The children have worked incredibly hard in Science to secure their subject knowledge all about Light. We have taken part in investigations to identify which objects are transparent, translucent or opaque and which materials/objects are reflective. Along with taking part in observations to learn about how shadows are made. Well done, Year 3!

This week's rewards go to Chloe for her amazing effort and attitude towards all of our lessons and Arber for his improved work ethic and participating more in class.

Year 4

This week, Year 4 have been learning all about the human digestive system. They have learnt about the journey food goes on from entry to exit, the vital organs involved and their functions. They have all demonstrated brilliant knowledge and put this into practice when carrying out their investigation to visually show what happens during the process of digestion. Excellent work Year 4!

This week's achievement awards go to, Catherine and Nate for their excellent partner work during the scientific investigation into the digestive system. Well done!

Year 5

This week, Year 5 have been re-adjusting to home learning. Thank you to all the parents and carers for helping them settle back into it. We are due back at school on Monday 28th June.

For Maths, the children have been learning about position by reading and writing coordinates, and in geometry they've shown a good understanding of regular and irregular polygons and the properties of 2D and 3D shapes.

In English, they've worked hard on practising grammar for our balanced argument writing. They've learned about passive voice, relative clauses and colon lists.

Finally, in Art we finished our unit on street art with the children creating their own stencils and art with a strong message about issues in the world. The children have been so enthusiastic about this unit and have produced some excellent pieces of artwork.

This week's awards go to Lexi for working more independently, and to Chloe for her discussions about 3D shapes and their properties. Well done, girls!

Kingfisher 2

Kingfisher 2 have been working on the text 'Into The Forest' by Anthony Browne. They have been writing letters, character descriptions and using expanded noun phrases to describe settings.

This weeks reward goes to Nathan and Jack for their fantastic cooking skills. Recently they have baked 'Bakewell Tart' and 'Banoffi Pie'!

Nightingales

This week in Maths we have been focusing on using different methods for addition. The children have done really well at using number facts, counting on using their fingers and using Dienes to help calculate with larger numbers.

In English, we have enjoyed studying 'Spyfox' an adventure film about a spy who saves the world. The children have written their own fabulous spy stories inspired by the film.

This week's award goes to Josh for his excellent independent Maths work. He was able to use Numicon to find number bonds and could also derive number facts.

Year 6

This week, Year 6 have had a busy week completing assessments and have really impressed us with the learning and resilience they have demonstrated. We are also preparing for our 'Year 6 show' and working really hard in rehearsals. We can't wait to dazzle you with their performances!

Football is back!

Just as the Euros start, so does school sport! Our children have been desperate to get back on the field and some Year 6 boys and girls were selected to represent the school on our first match. On Tuesday, we had our first game in over a year against Foulds. Considering the children haven't had much practice playing together, they performed outstandingly. We had an excellent turn out of supporters so thank you parents/carers who came to cheer us on. Sadly, the boys lost their game, however, the girls won 2-1. Well done to everyone who participated!
