November Week 3

Friday 21st November

PTA Comedy Night

This week’s School Comedy Night was a tremendous success, filling the hall with laughter from start to finish. Our headliners, Katie Green and Iain Stirling, were outstanding— an incredible standard of comedy for a small school in Barnet, and thoroughly enjoyed by everyone who attended.

Thanks to the fantastic turnout, the event raised an impressive £1,200 for the PTA. Every penny will go directly towards enriching the experience of our pupils.

A massive thank you goes to Joe Bor (parent of Milo and Levi) for organising and supporting the event so brilliantly. Thank you also to all the parents who came along, supported the school, and even went home with raffle prizes and auction items they never knew they needed!

We are also hugely grateful to our wonderful staff who helped on the night and still turned up bright and early the next morning to teach. Special thanks to Mrs Phelan, Mrs Stephens, Mrs Armstrong, Mr Sudbury and Mrs Cavozzi for helping make the evening run so smoothly.

A brilliant night of community, comedy, and support for our school - thank you to everyone involved.

It's time for our first Times Tables Rock Stars 'Battle of the bands' of the Year in Key Stage 2.

The classes will go head-to-head to see who can complete the most times tables questions at home throughout the week. Please encourage your children to get in the competitive spirit and join in playing the online game at home.

The competition begins Friday 21st of November and ends Friday 28th November. Results will be announced in next Friday's newsletter.

Year 3 vs Year 4

Year 5 vs Year 6

Good luck and game on!

Nursery

This week we have been learning all about ourselves and our families. The children have begun creating beautiful family portraits using the photos you have shared with us.

If you haven’t sent in a family photo yet, please email one to the school office as soon as possible, as the children are very proud of including their own families in our display.

We have also been exploring the book 'A Handful of Buttons', talking about how every family is unique and special. The children have enjoyed using buttons of different shapes, sizes and colours to represent the people in their families and to describe what makes each one different.

In Maths, we have been focusing on counting to 5, practising careful one-to-one correspondence to help us count accurately.

This week we also enjoyed our third Chickenshed workshop 'New Botanics'. The children loved role-playing the process of planting seeds, watering them and watching them “grow”. It has sparked lots of imaginative play and lovely discussions about nature.

Talking Homework

This week, please talk with your child about good hygiene habits, especially at this time of year when we are seeing a rise in coughs, colds and other illnesses. You might chat together about:

  • Covering coughs and sneezes (“Catch it, bin it, kill it!”)
  • Using tissues and throwing them away properly
  • Washing hands with soap and water, especially before eating and after using the toilet
  • Keeping hands away from mouths and faces

A little reminder at home makes a big difference in helping keep everyone healthy.

Kingfisher Early Years and Bluebirds

Although it feels like winter this week, we have been continuing to explore our theme of Autumn for a little longer. We have enjoyed sensory play and art and craft around this theme.

We have been reading 'A Handful of Buttons', a book about all the wonderfully different types of families there are and thinking about our own families and making pictures of them.

We have started a new sensory story in Bluebirds: 'Where the Wild Things Are', the children have engaged well with the different elements of the story. In our Fun with Food sessions, we enjoyed making pasta people and cereal houses.

Reception

This week we have started reading 'The Gruffalo' by Julia Donaldson. Reception have loved talking about the features of the Gruffalo and have even started singing a song about the woodland creature and his terrible tusks! The story has opened up lots of conversations about animals and the children have been exploring role play, dressing up, puppets and small world play to retell the story. The children have been inspired to draw by the illustrator Axel Scheffler and have really developed their drawing and writing skills.

Sing the song at home with them and see how well they can remember it!

The Gruffalo Song

Thank you to all for coming to the phonics IMPACT, please support us with your child’s reading at home and bring back all resources and filled in reading diary each Wednesday.

Year 1

We had a brilliant start to the week with our first Year 1 class trip. To consolidate our History learning, we visited the Young V&A museum and explored old toys. The children had lots of fun in the play areas and behaved exceptionally well. In History, we also looked at photos from when the children were younger and discussed past events. In Maths, we have started subtraction, using concrete resources to physically take away, as well as drawing dienes to represent ones when subtracting. We are continuing with the Read Write Inc. scheme in Phonics.

In English, we have begun our core text A Squash and a Squeeze where we made predictions and inferences about what the book could be about. We also learnt about nouns, verbs and adding the suffix -ed to put verbs into the past tense. In the afternoons, we have been begun our Geography Unit all about the Polar Regions. We looked at maps and colour-coded where the polar regions are, we learnt about the temperature and the Arctic's physical features such as ice bergs, glaciers and mountains.

Kingfisher 1

This week in Maths, we have been learning all about subtraction and finding the difference. The children explored the concept using a range of practical resources, including counters, Numicon, and number lines, which helped them build strong visual and hands-on understanding.

In English, we read 'The Very Selfish Crocodile'. The children enjoyed role-playing the story, bringing the characters and events to life through drama. They then used Colourful Semantics to help them structure and order sentences, supporting their understanding of story sequence and sentence construction.

Well done Tomoru!

Year 3

After reading 'The Day The Crayons Quit', Year 3 came into class to find out that our chairs were on strike! They heard a recording of a furious Year 3 chair who explained why she and her chair friends felt unloved, unappreciated and disrespected. We look forward to writing our informal letters next week. In Maths, we continued with multiplication and division. We finished our art lessons where the children explored positive and negative handprints. We created an amazing collaborative piece of art! Our Christmas show rehearsals continue and we are impressed with the children’s expression and projection. Please continue to work on their lines at home.

Homework:

Year 4

This week, Year 4 have really impressed us with the progression of their writing so far; they have written excellent diary entries. In Maths, the children are continuing with investigating multiplication and division facts.

In the afternoons, the children are learning about ‘States of Matter’ in Science and have investigated how a solid becomes a liquid by melting chocolate, the water cycle and how water changes through the three different states of matter.

Thank you for attending our Reading Impact and I hope you found it useful. It was lovely to have so many of you attend.

Reminder: We are fortunate to have the opportunity to see the Chicken Shed Christmas Show - please go onto Arbor to give permission and make payment, if you haven't already done so. Thank you.

Year 6

This week in Year 6, we have been writing our balanced arguments based on the question: Should Year 6 pupils be allowed to attend the residential trip to the Isle of Wight? The children considered both the positives and negatives of the trip in order to develop well-reasoned viewpoints. In Maths, we focused on finding the whole amount from a fractional amount, applying this skill to a range of problem- solving questions.

During our afternoon sessions, we started our D&T unit by exploring existing products such as Ring doorbells, Hive systems, Phillips Hue lights and Yale smart locks. The children investigated how these devices use complex circuits that include an input, process and output.

We also began learning our Christmas song, Carol of the Bells, which the children have enjoyed practising together.

Netball

On Tuesday, our netball team had their first competition of the year with 11 schools taking part. Our players opened the tournament with four brilliant games, winning three and drawing two. Their great teamwork and focus secured them a well-earned place in the semi-finals. The semi-final was a nail biting six-minute showdown, and our team kept their cool, scoring just before the final whistle to claim their spot in the grand final! The excitement didn’t stop there. In a fiercely fought final, our children gave absolutely everything. Although the opposing team managed to slip in a goal with only six seconds to go, we proudly finished in second place, earning silver medals. The children were amazing, showed superb determination, and represented our school brilliantly. We are so proud of every single one of them. Well done to Kevin, Elsie, Skye, Soroiyan, Anwen, Daniella and Lukas.

Multi-sports

On Wednesday, some children attended a multi-sports event. The children took part in a variety of sports activities, including running, jumping, coordination challenges, balancing tasks, and teamwork games. They engaged enthusiastically, developed key physical skills, and showed strong cooperation throughout. Their behaviour was excellent, and they represented the school exceptionally well while having a great deal of fun.

Football

On a cold and dark Wednesday evening, the Livingstone mixed team put in a superb performance against All Saints. Despite the challenging conditions, the players showed fantastic attitude throughout.

Livingstone created numerous chances thanks to excellent teamwork and slick passing, but the All Saints goalkeeper was in inspired form, keeping the scores level for most of the match. The breakthrough finally came when Kevin bundled in a scrappy but well deserved goal just moments before the final whistle.

That opener unlocked the game, and suddenly Livingstone were unstoppable. In a whirlwind finish, the team added four more goals, with Leon and Steffi each grabbing a well- earned brace.

A huge well done to Mikolaj, Anwen, Skye, Kevin, Leon, Edward, Elsie, Dotty, and Steffi for a brilliant all-round performance. A great display of determination, teamwork, and spirit.
