New Newsletter Writers

Exciting News! There are some new pupil newsletter writers writing the first newsletter of this school year: Maisie, Athena, Victor, Freddie, Emmanuel, Katerina, Orpita , Lois, Aiden L and Matteo. We will be writing this newsletter because we think there should be a newsletter written from a child's point of view. This gives the child an opportunity to talk about things that they would like to talk about including the school council, spooky adventure, cross country and much more that you can read later on in the newsletter. They will all be written by the children, who are outstanding writers, I have listed. We are all determined to write this letter and make it as good as we can so that you can enjoy reading it.

Kingfisher's Birthday

Great News! Its officially Kingfishers' 20th birthday! To celebrate this very important milestone, we invited many old members of the Livingstone family: Graham Lancaster - The head teacher who started off Kingfisher, Linda Orr- The Barnet head of SEND, Clive Partridge- Livingstone chair of governors. Shelly Farmer- Kingfisher Parent rep and Mrs Fairley + Mr Boucon- Former pupils of Kingfisher opening. There was also former pupils like Lauren, Spiros, Sam, Max F and Max G. We heard many inspirational speeches. Years 4,5 and 6 were in the hall whilst the rest were on a zoom call. Thank You to Mrs Phelan for making this assembly possible. Thank you to Mrs Ferdenzi and Miss Nicholson for hosting the assembly. Thank you to Jane Asher and Louise Robinson for the messages. There was also a tea party held at 14:30 to end such a fabulous afternoon. Thank you :).

Black History Month

Did you know it was Black History Month in October? Did you also know that Black History Month is also known as African-American History Month? If you didn't, then you should read this newsletter and I will explain to you about it. Black History Month is when you celebrate the past lives of (famous) black people. It also originated in the United States. It tells us that no one should be treated differently by skin tone. In the past, black people were treated very unfairly. They weren't allowed to stay in the same buses, they weren't allowed to go to cinemas, beaches and theatres. But some of the black people did not want this happening, so they tried protesting against it but it only put them into prison. So we think of them as heroes and that is why we celebrate Black History Month.

Before I finish, We are showing all of our work in assembly this week - year 6 are writing a letter from a black son from the book Refugee Boy to his father, who is at war with another country. Year 4 are doing a poem called Dere's a sonnet by Benjamin Zephaniah. Year 3 are doing a poem called Poems Everywhere by Benjamin Zephaniah and writing their own poems . Year 5 did performance Poetry on a John Agard Poem (this was amazing because he was about a boy who didn't feel he fitted in being white or black). Yr 2 sang a beautiful song to everybody which was based on Sulwe by Lupita Nyong. Year 1 studied the book and were thinking about what they wanted to be when they were older. Isabelle said that she 'wanted to be a Key Worker'. Reception read Anansi the Cheeky Spider and Filip told us how she got skinny legs! Kingfisher 1 made masks and ate Bananas, melon and honey! Thank you to Miss Papas for organising a brilliant week.

Thanks for reading,

School Council

Did you know the school council has been chosen? No? Well let me tell you! They have been chosen not long ago, in a private voting poll where the children, including myself, were sent to vote for who seems like the correct children to become SC members from their class to them. The people chosen had to be honest, brave and had to have good intentions for this school, the staff and the youngsters alike! The school council are... children in this school who are... kind and caring... and are also known as... Zack, Zeynep and Emmanuel (Year 6)! Nate and Orpita (Year 5)! Sophia and Kayce (Year 4)! Zyan and Zainab (Year 3)! Georgie, Ryan and Scarlett (Year 2)! And last but certainly not least... Liana and Ellis (Year 1)! I say congratulations to all these children for they have all done very well! It is always a good thing to know who the School Council are! Now, this is me, V.D, signing off.

Swimming is back!

Finally, the time has come for the YR5s to go for their two-week course of swimming at New Barnet Leisure Centre after a long a two-year delay. Don't go thinking that you are 7 or 8 years old all of a sudden - that's all Covid's fault! They leave school at 9:30am with partners for a 45 minute lesson and come back at 11:10am - how exciting!

There are 3 groups: the beginner group for people who are not as confident as others, the middle group that are learning different strokes up to the red line in the pool. Lastly, is the advanced group who swim lengths with flippers in lanes as the picture shows. Sometimes, the teachers even joined in the pool!

The class has really enjoyed this special experience out of the classroom that felt like a school trip everyday! The class also enjoyed practicing their swimming strokes everyday.

Many thanks to Miss Smith, Mr Sudbury, Mr T and Miss Consitt for taking their time to bring the class to the pool;)

After School Clubs

At Livingstone, we are so lucky to have the opportunity to participate in a variety of after school clubs such as Football, Tag Rugby, Multi-sports, Performing arts, Netball, Dance, Yoga, Spanish and not forgetting our wonderful Breakfast and Cabin Club! All of which are organised by the amazing Mrs Kelly.

After school clubs are a time you can spend with your friends, make new friends, keep fit, get creative and learn something new! They also teach life skills like leadership and teamwork!

The clubs have been extremely popular, and I thought it would be nice to share some pupil’s opinions with you:

Tag rugby – ‘I like tag rugby because it is fun, and you get very exhausted.’ Tyler Y6

Football – ‘You can learn more skills and earn achievements.’ Nadine Y3

Performing arts (Lemon Jelly) – ‘I like playing games and learning dance routines.’ – Scarlet Y2

Spanish – ‘I like Spanish because you can speak different languages to people that speak it.’ – Elia Y3

Multi Sports – ‘I like when we play football.’- Lexi Y2

Yoga – ‘I like yoga because you have to copy the teacher Kate doing cat pose and flamingo pose.’ Sienna Y1

Cabin Club – ‘I like Cabin Club because I have made new friends.’ Hadiya Y6

I hope more students join after school clubs, and I hope all in them have a blast!

Foundation Subjects

This year, teachers have made foundation subjects [ afternoon subjects ] a bit more fun by adding knowledge organisers to learning. A knowledge organiser is a sheet of paper that explains a subject with pictures, facts on the subject and a glossary. There is now more quizzes and a few trips such as year 5's River Lea trip and year 3's stone age trip. The trips are really fun! When you do foundation subjects, they often continue for a week or two instead of one lesson every week. Foundation subjects is science or a subject in your topic book. This consists of History, Geography, Art, RE, PSHE, Music and more. Teachers are using chili challenges to help students learn. Chili challenges are tasks that all have a different amount of hardness in them [warm, hot, spicy and for an extra challenge, on fire]. We are all 'learning more, remembering more'.

Spooky Adventure

Every year, the PTA set up an event for the children to celebrate Halloween. With the help of Mr Sudbury, the pond area was all spooked up ready for the fun to begin. This year the event happened on 19th October and the children were able to dress up as a spooky character of their choice. The children enjoyed glitter tattoos, cupcakes, face painting, fidget stalls and many more. It included a spooky dance floor, a visit to the haunted house and lots of amazing prizes to be won! To top it all off, all children were given a sweetie cone to take home with them. Such a great day with lots of fun memories!

A huge thank you to Lina, Mr Sudbury, Diane and all the PTA (especially the parents who helped out) and all staff. It was lovely to see some new helpers :-)

Year 3 Stone Age Trip!

Year 3 went on a thrilling adventure to Lea Valley Park on a minibus because they are learning about the Stone age. That day, Diane and Miss Fairley drove as well as Mr Sudbury helping out. There were many activities that they enjoyed that made them smile.

All pupils found it interesting seeing what plants people in the Stone age used to eat - what do you think they are? They also learnt what medicine they used. If I was there, my mind would have been blown away by the information they learnt about the Stone age, Iron age and Bronze age. I nearly forgot the most entertaining part which is... they created fire by themselves on the trip - can you believe that? It must have been hard work! They also drew some Stone age drawings and their artistic skills were absolutely amazing! All pupils created a time line and went plant hunting.

On that day they were certainly excited (I know that for a fact). I asked a few students their comments... Muthara stated, "I really liked making fire." Sonny liked it too. Nadine liked the cave drawing and finally, Lewis explained, "I liked exploring different plants."

Overall, all children enjoyed this trip and all the activities. Miss Fairley and Miss Boucon worked hard to set up this trip so a round of applause to them. :-)

Year 6 Shakespeare Workshop

Year 6 had a workshop on Romeo and Juliet by Shakespeare and acted out the scenes. They each had their own part and participated in it. The story was set in Verona, Italy and is about two young lovers from feuding families. The year 6 acted out with loads of enthusiasm and energy. It was very entertaining and a fun topic to learn about. It was hosted by the Young Shakespeare Company .It was fun!

Safia the snake visited!

xTgISoIuAAT8tB

Mr and Mrs Osman Kindly brought in Eren's (Yr 4) pet Royal Python for some of the classes to meet. Lots of pupils got to experience touching a snake for the first time and they were suprised how smooth she was. We found out that she ate a mouse per week and will grow to be around five feet long! Thank you to the Osman family for providing our children with another valuable experience.
