February Week 4

Friday 26th February

We hope that everyone is looking forward to the re- opening of Livingstone on Monday 8th March to all of our pupils. Teachers and support staff have been working very hard to ensure pupils have been taught to the highest possible standards in and out of school and they have felt incredibly supported by the positive attitudes from pupils and parents/carers.

Next week we will be preparing school for the re-start so please check your emails and messages as we will sending home information on what to expect on the return to school. Despite the setbacks in the last few weeks, due to the resilience everyone has demonstrated, both individually and collectively, we are very much looking forward to the new start.

In order to help us prepare, we are intending to stop delivering home learning in the afternoon at 1.30 on Friday 5th March and close the school (this does not apply to Nursery). This will enable us to the give the school a deep clean, test everyone and allow Teachers and TAs to get the school ready for the Monday. We are sorry if this is inconvenient for some parents/carers however there are lots of things that need to be put in place to ensure a safe return.

Creative Wednesday

Circus skills and magic tricks was this week's Creative Wednesday theme. All pupils used the fundamental skills of movement, co-ordination and balance just like being at a circus. The outcome was once again impressive and utterly entertaining!

Pupils built their own circus tents and little dens at home and performed a variety of circus acts. For a day, they were acrobats, contortionists, mimes, ventriloquists, jugglers, illusionists and magicians. All of the magic tricks were performed to such a high standard that made us wonder whether those magic wands and spells were actually real!

Circus skills demanded a lot of concentration, focus and patience which all our pupils had aplenty. They didn't give up after the first try. On the contrary, they carried on and on.

A massive round of applause to everyone who took part in our Circus Skills Day and remember...Practice makes perfect!

Nursery

Nursery's theme this week has been Little Red Riding Hood. Pupils have been reading the story together, making up some action rhymes and singing - as well as learning all about the colour 'red'. They have made a maze for Little Red Riding Hood to get to Grandma's Cottage out of bricks and little characters to help them act out the story. They have drawn Grandma's basket full of fruit and vegetables. So much fun!

Umeyr made a set of characters to help him act out the story of Little Red Riding Hood and Phoebe made a lovely collage of Little Red Riding Hood and Grandma.

Reception

This week Reception have enjoyed focusing on the traditional tale of Jack and the Beanstalk. They have been labeling the items Jack stole from the giant and writing speech bubbles for the characters in the story. They have been measuring using non-standard units in Maths. Reception have also amazed us with their fantastic 3D models of the setting and props for their retelling of the story.

Year 1

This week Year 1 have been revising their learning of the oceans and continents as well as learning about the North and South Poles. They made amazing balloon globes after watching Mrs Duggan's teaching video.

Well done for some brilliant Geography work Year 1!

Year 2

In Maths, Y2 have been working on making patterns using shapes and going on 3D shape hunts! Pupils created robots and castles out of 3D shapes. They have learnt about the porperties of 3D shapes.

In English pupils have been working very hard on their sentences and used a video animation called The Lone Robot to inspire their writing. They have been working on using conjunctions and suffix words.

Their new topic of transport has begun and they have been looking at pictures of how transport in Barnet was different in the past to the present.

Well done for all the amazing work Year 2, keep up the brilliant effort!

Kingfisher 1

Kingfisher 1 have been working on telling the time.

Kingfisher 2

This week Kingfisher 2 have done lots of great work on 2D shapes. They also had a great time on Creative Wednesday.

Year 3

Year 3 have been learning about length and have worked very hard to identify lengths in mm, cm and m. To practice, they took part in their own measurement hunt!

Ancient Egypt is one of Year 3's favourite topics. They learnt about hieroglyphics and have been writing the names of the different ancient gods and their own names.

This half of the term their new Science topic is Rocks and Fossils and they are turning out to be top geologist experts! They know all about how rocks are formed and the three types of natural rock.

Year 4

Year 4 this week have been subtracting fractions. Here is a piece of work from Alex who completed a challenging word problem using bar models to support him. Alex has worked hard all week and has had a positive attitude towards his work.

Year 5

This week, Year 5 have started their Science work on Earth and Space. They learned about how celestial bodies, such as satellites, moons and planets, orbit and rotate; the phases of the moon; and about the eight planets in our Solar System. Special mentions go to Amie for her clear explanation video on orbiting, Lexi for her informative PowerPoint about the planets and Jake for his facts about the moon.

Year 6

Year 6 have been very busy this week. In Maths, pupils have been learning about metric measures and English they have been using their text 'Letters from the Lighthouse' to study letter-writing. In their afternoon lessons, pupils have completed art work where we have been experimenting with tone. They also completed their Science unit on 'Light' and created posters to demonstrate everything that we learned.

Year 6 have also been summarising and creating timelines and flow charts showing all the events that happened to Olive (an evacuee who was sent to Devon during WW2) from our book Letters from the Lighthouse.

Erin 6L

She could write about their not very nice journey to the country side. Cliff had his comic book taken and they could not sit down anywhere. The other evacuees were disturbing and loud, they were also rude.

When they arrived at the station. They were hungry and tired and could hear Women fighting over who to choose. Queenie did not turn up and they had to find her themselves.

As soon as they got to Queenie’s house, they felt unwelcome by her sudden insults thrown at them. She gave them scarcely any food and a small bedroom to share in the attic.

Once they had finally settled in, a girl called Esther moved in with them. At first, she seemed rude and annoying and Olive and Esther had a big fight because Esther took Sukie’s letter that Olive possessed. They get kicked out because of the argument.

They moved in a light house with a man called Ephraim who lived in a lighthouse. To get to their new home, they had to climb a ladder which made Cliff really scared and he nearly fell. Ephraim has a dog called Pixie who Cliff adored.

Olive finds that Ephraim had been knitting a load of clothes for some mystery people. She does not know who it is for and becomes rather curious.

Olive starts to like living there and becomes quite fond of Ephraim. They get a lot more food than they used to and he made them feel comfortable.

People decide to paint the lighthouse to disguise it. Olive finds out that it was in fact Ephraim who was pen pals with Sukie not Queenie.

A German pilot crashes and lands near the lighthouse. Olive tried to make people realise that they should not harm him because she saw that he was trying to turn the Luftwaffe to prevent it from hitting them.

A boat comes in with the mystery people and Olive hopes that Sukie is on it. This was after she cracked the code from Sukie’s letter. Esther helps her because she could not find Queenie or Ephraim.

They realise a baby is still on board and try to rescue it. Esther sees her father and gives him a huge hug. Olive pretends that he was her father and she was reuniting with him miraculously.

They all go back to Queenie's house but it is different and more lively than before. She feels upset all the same because Sukie was not on the ship.

Advay 6L

First they went on a long journey to a new town. The journey took a long time and they were insulted and Cliff’s comic book was snatched .They expected Queenie to be very welcoming.

But instead they had to start work and did not get a deserved rest while there was women talking to each other as for who would be the host for which children.

They were taken to an uncomfortable place in the attic where it was extremely cold with fire for heat.

They were insulted by Queenie and schoolchildren. The school which they go to is very unwelcoming.

Without,warning Olive and Cliff were kicked out of the house and replaced by Esther.They had to move in to Ephraim’s house .Cliff was frightened when they had to climb a steep ladder to get into his house.They found it very odd and surprising.

They saw a German pilot from the Luftwaffe who crashed and Olive felt sorry for him. Ephraim also mentions that he has a dog named Pixie and Cliff feels happy.

Pupils have also been writing summaries of the journey Lisa Jura (a Kindertransport evacuee) would have taken to get to Great Britain.

Maya 6L

Lisa Jura was a Kindertransport evacuee from Austria who lived in Vienna. Her first location on the Kindertransport trains was Frankfurt, Frankfurt is placed in the middle of Germany . After the Kindertransport children reached Frankfurt the next location was Nuremburg and Nuremburg is the second-largest city of the German state. Next, the journey continued and the next location was Cologne. This is one of the final destinations before Great Britain. Finally, we have the Hook of Holland and it is a town in the southern corner of Holland. Moving on we have Harwich which is a town in Wessex with many places to explore. The last destination was London Liverpool street which is an underground shelter and station where people would find safety from many German attacks.

Mia and Zuzanna 6B, have also been considering how the author of their class book, Emma Carroll, has developed the characters to engage the reader.

Tommy 6B, has completed some great standard unit conversions in Maths, he also went back once it was marked to correct any errors.

MC Grammar and World Book Day Collaboration

We are very proud to announce that Livingstone's Mr Mitchell, aka MC Grammar - the nations favourite rapping English teacher, has released the first ever World Book Day official song. He has created a brilliant book-themed tune to help celebrate.

The World Book Day song has been released by Decca Records and in collaboration with World Book Day, Monkey and Encanta Talent Management. All proceeds will be donated to World Book Day to support their vision to engage children from all backgrounds with a life-long habit of reading.

The song follows MC Grammar as he embarks on a journey to find a new book, courtesy of his World Book Day £1 book voucher. On his way he stumbles across a fantastic array of classic and new children’s books – can you spot them all?

He has set some great activities from writing your own book rap to fun ways of bringing books to life. These will be available to download soon.

This week every pupil has been sent their World Book Day token to download via parent/carer email. Art at Livingstone

KS1 and KS2 have been exploring Monochromatic Art this week. They discovered that it is a style of art composed by using just one colour.

As pupils have been working at home, they were asked to use coffee mixed with water as their painting medium because it is an easily accessible item and very effective. Absolutely no paint was needed although some preferred to use it instead.

Everyone looked very carefully at images of tree bark to inspire the shapes in their spiral creations. Look at the range of shades pupils have mixed using just coffee granules.....It has many other talents besides just keeping us adults awake!

A Safe Return to School
