January Week 4
Friday 30th January
Rock and Pop Assembly
A big well done to our guitarists Taha, Sky, Ryan, Christina and our Ukulelists Filip, Gino, Matias, Aysha, Nirvani and Daisy for their fantastic performance in yesterday's assembly. It was lovely to see how confident they are and how much progress they have made in Edwards lessons.
If anyone is interested in having one‑to‑one private lessons with Edward you can contact him from the details provided.
'Healthy Snacks'
Reminder
We have noticed that some children are bringing in snacks that are less healthy, rather than choosing the fruit that is available to all children free of charge in EYFS and KS1, and at a highly subsidised rate in KS2.
We would like to remind families that items such as crisps, fruit winders and cereal bars are not considered healthy snacks. Although they are often marketed as nutritious options, they are highly processed and contain concentrated sugars—sometimes even more than sweets. These can significantly increase the risk of tooth decay and are best viewed as occasional treats rather than everyday snacks.
Whole fruits are a far better choice, as they provide natural vitamins, fibre, and a lower impact on teeth and blood sugar levels.
If your child does not enjoy fruit, please take extra care when choosing an alternative snack and opt for the healthiest option possible. We appreciate your support in helping us promote healthy eating habits for all children.
Nursery
This week in Nursery we have continued exploring traditional tales. We focused on Goldilocks and the Three Bears and the children have been thoroughly enjoying it!
As part of our learning, the children have taken part in lots of hands-on activities. They enjoyed making oat biscuits and tasting porridge, where they were able to choose their own fruit toppings and talk about what they liked or didn’t like. We have also been busy with role play, using masks and props to act out the story, which has been great for developing language, imagination and confidence.
In Maths, we have been learning about:
- ABAB patterns – for example, red, blue, red, blue – and spotting or continuing repeating patterns.
- The cardinal principle – this means understanding that when we count objects, the last number we say tells us how many there are altogether. For example, if we count 1, 2, 3, 4 then we know there are 4 objects in total.
As part of our personal, social, and emotional development, the children have been learning about the importance of being patient, taking turns, and helping our new children who are settling in. They are learning to be good role models, showing them our routines and making them feel welcome.
Talking Homework
At home, you might like to:
- Talk about the story of Goldilocks and the Three Bears and ask your child which part they liked best
- Ask your child to help you count objects at home (toys, fruit, steps) and talk about how many there are altogether
- Look for patterns around the house, such as colours, clothes or shapes
Kingfisher Early Years & Nurture
This week in Kingfisher Early Years we have started a new traditional tale; Goldilocks and the Three Bears. This has given the children lots of opportunities for counting and ordering different sizes, as well as sequencing. They have enjoyed the porridge sensory trays and will be making some hot porridge next week.
The Makaton song of the week is the goldilocks song. youtube.com/watch?v=TO21SNLF5P4
In Bluebirds we are themed around the Gingerbread man this week. They have enjoyed retelling the story using puppets, wooden figures and role play masks.
In Fun with Food they made bread animals and gingerbread biscuits.
The sensory story this week continued from last week, we're going on a bear hunt.
Reception
Reception have had a great week this week! We have loved getting messy mixing and exploring primary colours and discussing the secondary colours that can be made. We've enjoyed the last of the bus themed activities including working on cutting and shape skills. We have been making amazing towers and small world maps for our brand new toy buses and the children have been very imaginative with their constructions, using magnets and mobilo to make single decker, double decker and even bendy buses!
In our maths sessions the children are become confident with counting amounts, talking about more and less and even and odd numbers.
They are doing really well in their phonics groups and are making fantastic progress with their writing. We have been focussing on writing CVC words and getting lots of practice of using the rhymes to remind us of the correct formation. Continue to support them with daily reading at home and remember to record it in the reading diary too... we love to see how they are getting on at home too!
Year 1
In Maths, we have been representing numbers to 20 on a number line and ordering and comparing numbers within 20. In Phonics, we are continuing to follow the Read Write Inc. scheme. Year 1 have been busy authors this week. We shared our animal riddles with Reception and we read our Mr Men inspired stories to Year 5. The children loved creating their own characters and really enjoyed sharing their work with others. We have now started reading Supertato in class and this will be our inspiration for our next writing piece. The children have thoroughly enjoyed learning about continents and oceans in Geography, and we have now begun Art, where we are focusing on primary and secondary colours.

In Maths this week, Year 2 have been learning about multiplication and division. We have been recognising, making and adding equal groups and learning all about the 'x' symbol and what it means. In English, we have started our new book 'The Lonely Beast' which the children have really enjoyed. We made predictions and inferences about the story, and then used expanded noun phrases to describe the Beast and the different settings. The story has also inspired our Art lessons this week, where we have been using our drawing skills to create fabulous concertina books all about The Lonely Beast. In PSHE, we learnt about what an emergency is, how to make an emergency phone call, different emergency services and what we might need to say to the responder.
The first achievement award goes to Julia for her fantastic behaviour, attitude and focus.
The second achievement award goes to Samuel for his focus and hard work in all lessons this week. Well done!

This week in Maths, we have been learning about time, including the days of the week, months of the year, and units of time such as seconds, minutes, and hours. The children have been recalling the days and months through songs and enjoyed taking part in fun practical activities, such as seeing how many jumps they could do in one minute.
In English, we continued our work on the traditional story Goldilocks and the Three Bears. The children answered comprehension questions, created a story map, and wrote an apology letter from Goldilocks to the three bears.

This week's achievement awards go to Levi, Stylianos, Leslie and Dajjen for completing their sticker charts.
Well done!
Year 3
This week we started our new class book The Wild Robot, and the children are already hooked by the story. In English, we explored direct speech and identified prepositional phrases to develop our writing skills. In Maths, we focused on dividing with remainders, using practical resources as well as drawing to support our understanding. In Art, we completed our 3D sculptures, showcasing fantastic imagination and teamwork while practising shaping and joining techniques.

Year 4
Year 4 have finished swimming and have all made fantastic progress. We hope that they continue to practice these skills with you!
This week, the children have been making their enterprise products to sell at the upcoming film night. It has taken a lot of resilience as it has required a lot of fine motor skills and the tying of knots. Through this, we have discovered a number of children are unable to tie their shoe laces – please practise this skill with your child.

Sporting Leagues
Football
Our mixed league team played in the Mixed Football Cup against Monken Hadley on Tuesday. The children were full of enthusiasm and excited to put into practice the skills they have been developing at after school club. Throughout the match, the team showed excellent control of the ball and worked hard to keep play in the attacking third of the pitch. This strong teamwork allowed us to set the pace of the game and create plenty of goal scoring opportunities. The players showed great determination and focus to maintain their lead from start to finish. We are very proud to share that the match ended in a fantastic 4–0 win. We are through to the semi-finals! Well done to Leon, Edward, Stefi, Zak, Ryan, Mikolaj, Ellis, Skye and Kevin.
Our girls team also took part in a Cup match on Wednesday against Alma. The girls played brilliantly, showing great determination and teamwork throughout the game. Despite facing strong opposition and a well organised defence that worked hard to block their attacks, the girls stayed focused and did not give up. Their perseverance paid off as they continued to create chances and defend confidently. The match ended with an impressive clean sheet and a well- deserved 2–0 victory. We are through to another semi-final! Well done to Ryann, Xhizela, Daniella, Anwen, Soroiyan, Elsie, Holly, Amelia and Dotty.
Netball
Our netball team played against St Andrew’s last Friday as part of the Netball League. The children were very well prepared for the match, and this was clear from the start with their confident passing up and down the court in both attack and defence. The team got off to a strong start and maintained their focus and teamwork throughout the game. There were some excellent shots on goal and great support from all players across the court. The match ended in a fantastic 11–2 win for our team. We have two more games to go. Come on, Livingstone! Well done to Mikolaj, Kevin, Soroiyan, Elsie, Skye, Anwen and Daniella.
