Livingstone Primary and Nursery School

Year One Spring Curriculum Overview

January 2016

Dear Parents/Carers,

Firstly we would like to wish you a Happy New Year and we hope you had a good Christmas break.  We would like to let you know that all the children are settling very well into Year 1.  We are really looking forward to spending the rest of this year working with your children and are sure we will have lots of fun! Below is some information that is important for the coming year!

PE Kits

Our usual days for PE are Mondays and Wednesdays. Please ensure that your child comes dressed in their full PE kit every Wednesday morning and in their PE shoes every Monday morning. They will remain in their PE kit until the end of the school day.  Spare kits are not readily available and your child will have to sit out of lessons if they do not have appropriate wear.

Reading

The children should have their book bag in school each day.

Children will read individually to an adult as often as possible and also read in a guided group most days. The Bug Club scheme reading books are now being sent home and will be changed when necessary, however, there are eBooks available for every single printed Bug Club book we use and the children can access the independent reading resources online. If your child does not have their username and password, then please let a member of the Year 1 team know.

We suggest that all books are read more than once at home to build familiarity and confidence.

Read With Me

Thank you to those parents who have been attending the sessions throughout Year 1 so far. I know that the children really enjoy having you in school and it gives us an opportunity to pass on information that will help you to become more involved with your child’s learning.  We are going to continue to run the sessions throughout Year One in the Library (Monday 8.50am – 9.10am) so if you have not yet been then you’re more than welcome to come along. The children will be awarded with a book after attending 6 sessions and please remember to write in the reading diary every time you share a book with your child at home as this counts towards the 6 sessions.

Library

The children will be visiting the school library every Monday (when possible) and will be able to choose a book of interest to read at home.  It is essential that this book is brought into school the following week so that it can be changed.  Library books are the children’s own choice and are not an indication of their reading level.

Homework

At this stage in the year regular ‘homework’ is spellings and reading. (15 minutes reading every night is a general guide.) On occasions, we will be sending home ‘talking homework’ or tasks to do at home. Your child will usually bring a note to accompany anything I ask them to do.

The children will also bring home a ‘Home Book’ which is to be used for independent drawing or writing.  When your child shares something they have done in their book, they will usually get a sticker as a reward.

Spellings/High Frequency Words

The children will soon start to receive spellings again each week, which will continue to run alongside our phonics system. These will be tested every Friday.  The children will also be given high frequency words and topic words for them to learn to read and eventually spell.  Please could you help by ensuring that your child makes every effort to learn their spellings and high frequency words each week.

New National Curriculum

If you would like to learn more about the new National Curriculum this then please go to https://www.gov.uk/government/collections/national-curriculum

Before school is a particularly busy time, but if you would like to meet with me please feel free to make an appointment any time after school.
