Playground Buddies
Playground Buddies
Our playground buddy scheme plays an important part in creating a safe, friendly, happy and peaceful atmosphere for children during the morning break and lunchtimes.
The playground buddies are children from year 5 who are given the opportunity to take on the formal role of ‘Playground Buddy’. This involves making a written application for the post of Playground Buddy. Candidates are then interviewed. They are appointed if they meet the criteria for being a buddy, which is:
- Show kindness to others.
- Be prepared, at all times, to put the needs of others before their own.
- Observe the behaviour of other children in the playground.
- Support any child who seems to be in difficulty or upset.
- Offer others reassurance.
- Seek to find a friend for any child who seems to have no one to play with.
- Tell the adult/adults on duty about potentially dangerous situations.
- Lead a child to an adult who can give First Aid, if appropriate.
- Deal fairly with all children.
- Value every child who belongs to Livingstone Primary and Nursery School and treat them with respect.
Successful applicants attend four training sessions.
The buddies really enjoy their responsibilities, and not only do they make the playground a happy place for all the children, but also offer a great help to the staff on duty at lunchtime.
What is their role?
To help all children to learn to play cooperatively with each other.
To help children resolve minor conflicts.
Teach children to play a wider range of games.
Help lonely children make more friends.
Most importantly, be available as a friend to all the other children.
How do we spot them?
Look out for their bright green waistcoats. When should you use a buddy?
You should use a buddy if you are unhappy, feeling lonely, feeling angry or are worried about anything.
The buddies will try to help you feel better.
