June Week 2
Friday 12th June
Barnet Music Festival
When Miley Cyrus won a Grammy for Flowers, she thought she’d be the star of the show. What she wasn’t expecting was that, months later, the Livingstone Year 5 and 6 choir would outshine her at the Barnet Music Festival and make the whole night truly blossom.
Our pupils were immaculately turned out and delivered a polished performance, supported every step of the way by Mrs Cockburn, Mr Boucon and Mrs Fewster. In fact, the whole evening was excellent in showcasing the musical talents of pupils across Barnet schools, including several of our own pupils who accompanied the singing by playing instruments.
We unable to take photos due to strict rules at the venue but will share the video of the performances when we have received it from BEAT.
Save the Dates!
Nursery
This week in Nursery, we have continued our exciting pirate theme while also beginning to explore different modes of transport. We discussed how pirates travel by ship and compared this with the many ways we travel today, such as by bus, train, car and aeroplane.
Inspired by the book The Train Ride, the children helped to create a train station in our role-play area. They thoroughly enjoyed taking on different roles, including ticket collectors, passengers, and train drivers. We also had lots of fun singing and acting out the song "We Are Getting on the Train."
To support early literacy skills, the children took part in a playdough activity where they used a pencil tip to carefully pierce and trace the first letter of their name. Some children challenged themselves further by forming their entire name.
During our boat rescue water play activity, the children worked together to save different shapes from the water. We talked about the names and properties of the shapes, discussing how many sides and corners each one has.
The children also enjoyed expressing their creativity and imagination by designing and creating their own models using a variety of recyclable materials. It was wonderful to see the unique ideas they came up with.
Finally, we introduced our new busy boards and talked about the importance of tool safety. The children learned how to use tools responsibly and had the opportunity to explore screwdrivers, spanners, wrenches, and Allen keys under close supervision, developing their fine motor skills and problem-solving abilities.
Phonics this week was /b/ for boot and f

How do you travel to nursery? What different types of transport have you used? Which transport is your favourite and why? Have you ever travelled on a train? Where did you go?
Letters: Can you spot the first letter of your name around your home or when you are out and about? Can you name any family members who have the same first letter as you?
Shapes: Go on a shape hunt around your home. Can you find circles, squares, rectangles, and triangles? Talk about how many sides and corners each shape has.
Kingfisher Early Years & Nurture
This week in Kingfisher Early Years we have continued with our theme of, On the Farm. The children have loved the stories and songs and the role play farm area. We are looking forward to our trip to Lewis of London in a few weeks!
The phonics sounds for this week were 'b' as in boot and 'f' as in flower. Please reinforce these sounds when you are in the home or out and about.
In Bluebirds we continued with our theme of Transport, the children enjoyed making moving pictures with different vehicles. they explored 2d shapes to make pictures of trains.
In Fun with Food they made red bus cupcakes and transport shaped sandwiches. The children are becoming more independent with their culinary skills!
The sensory story this week was about a train ride to the beach, the children enjoyed spotting the different elements and trying sensory experiences.
Reception
Our pirate and mermaid adventures have continued this week, and the children have been fully immersed in all things treasure, maps and life at sea!
Our key text this week has been Pirates in the Supermarket. The children loved the funny story and the mischievous pirates. The book inspired our Literacy learning as we explored rhyming words. We had lots of fun creating silly rhyming names using our own names and thinking of other words that rhyme. There were plenty of giggles as we made up some very silly combinations together! Next week, we will build on this learning by exploring real rhyming pairs and spotting rhymes in stories, games and songs.
In Maths, we became pirate treasure hunters! The children used gold coins and sparkling jewels to complete a series of treasure challenges. They practised adding and taking away amounts, as well as doubling numbers, whilst carefully following each set of instructions. We were very impressed with their counting skills and the way they explained how they found their answers.
The children have continued to enjoy our pirate role play, setting sail on imaginary ships and working together to search for treasure. It has been wonderful to hear their conversations as they took on different roles and created their own adventures. We heard lots of cries of "Ahoy mateys!", "We need to cross the high seas!" and "Find that treasure, me hearties!" as the
Talking Homework
• Can you think of some rhyming words together? How many rhyming pairs can you find?
• If pirates came to your supermarket, what do you think they would buy?
Growing Up and Changes
As we approach the end of Reception, we will be spending some time talking about growing up, how we have changed and all the things we can do now that we couldn't do when we were babies.
To support this learning, we would be very grateful if you could send in a photograph of your child as a baby. You can either email a photo to office@livingstone.barnetmail.net or send in a printed copy with your child.
The children always love comparing their baby photos with how they look now, and it helps to spark lots of lovely conversations about growing, learning and the exciting journey they have been on throughout Reception.

This week's awards go to:
Harry and Sevana – for always giving every activity a go and showing a fantastic attitude to learning.
Beatrix and Lyra – for their wonderful independent writing and the confidence they are showing when applying their phonic knowledge.
Iris – for her excellent maths work and the perseverance she has shown when solving our pirate treasure challenges.
Year 1
In Maths, we have continued our learning about fractions. The children used sharing methods to find quarters of amounts and practised identifying whether a fraction was a half or a quarter. We then used our understanding of fractions to learn about turns, exploring quarter turns, half turns and full turns by turning objects in different directions. Unfortunately, the weather has not quite matched our expectations of summer, so we have temporarily paused our Science learning on the season and are hoping for some sunshine soon! We have started DT where we have begun our new cooking topic. The children have been learning about where different fruits come from and have enjoyed becoming chefs for the week. They practised their chopping skills safely and carefully to prepare a variety of fruits, which they were then able to taste. Next week, we are looking forward to using our new skills to make fruit kebabs. Year 1 also completed their Phonics Screening Check this week. We are incredibly proud of all the children and the fantastic progress they have made throughout the year. Well done, Year 1! :)

Cricket League
Cricket season has begun! Children from Years 4 to 6 have been working hard all year with Mr Fisher, developing their batting, bowling and fielding skills. We are also very excited to have entered a new league this year, which is a first for Livingstone. Last Thursday, a group of pupils were selected to play against Foulds Primary School. At the start of the game, our team took a few overs to settle into the match. After getting into the swing of it, children demonstrated accurate bowling and some confident batting. There were several fantastic shots played around the wicket, allowing our team to score valuable runs and keep the scoreboard ticking over. The opposition, however, bowled very well and managed to take several wickets, which helped them build a strong score. Despite the result not going our way, the children got some valuable learning experience of out it and has made them more determined for our next match! Well done to Daniella, Anwen, Skye, Lukas, Zak, Milo, Ellis and Zachariah.
Cricket Tournament.
Last week, we also took part in our first cricket tournament in 10 years! The team played three matches, winning two and narrowly losing one. Throughout the tournament, the children demonstrated excellent batting, bowling and fielding skills, as well as fantastic teamwork and determination. There were some impressive individual performances, with pupils scoring valuable runs, taking wickets and making important stops in the field. Unfortunately, only one team was able to progress to the next stage of the competition. However, the pupils should be extremely proud of their achievements and the way they performed. Well done to Toby, Jonathan, Daniella, Anwen, Skye, Lukas, Zak, Milo, Ellis and Zachariah.
T1 Rugby- Twickenham
Following on from last week's trip to Twickenham Stadium to take part in a T1 Rugby Festival, we are delighted to share that Livingstone has been featured in a news article celebrating the event. The article highlights the success of our team and the positive impact they made during the event. We are also proud to see our children featured but also Mr Boucon.
It is always rewarding to see our pupils representing the school so positively. Here is the link.

T1 Rugby: Livingstone vs Ashmole:
This week, the rugby team played their second league fixture of the season against Ashmole, building on the success of their recent trip to Twickenham. The children demonstrated excellent teamwork, communication and sportsmanship throughout the match, securing an impressive 9–1 victory. Their hard work, organisation and determination were clear to see, and every player contributed to the result. This win puts the team in a strong position as they aim to secure the league title for the fourth consecutive year. Well done to everyone involved!
