Reception at Livingstone
A Confident Start to School Life
Reception is an exciting year where children build upon their early experiences and develop the knowledge, skills and confidence they need for a successful journey through primary school. At Livingstone, we provide a happy, stimulating and nurturing environment where every child feels safe, valued and inspired to learn.
Our Reception class has 30 children, led by an experienced class teacher and supported by one dedicated teaching assistant. This enables us to provide high-quality teaching alongside targeted support, ensuring every child is challenged, encouraged and celebrated as an individual.
Our bright and engaging learning environments change throughout the year to reflect our topics and children's interests, creating exciting opportunities for exploration, creativity and discovery. Every area of the classroom is carefully designed to encourage independence, curiosity and purposeful play.

Our Reception Curriculum
Our curriculum builds upon children's experiences in Nursery while preparing them for the transition into Reception. Learning is carefully planned around the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), combining structured teaching with purposeful play and exploration.
We believe children learn best when they are actively involved in meaningful experiences. Through high-quality interactions, exciting investigations and engaging activities, children develop confidence, resilience and a lifelong love of learning.
One of the unique strengths of Livingstone Reception is our exceptional outdoor learning. Our extensive school grounds, dedicated outdoor learning environment, pond and wildlife area, together with our close proximity to the beautiful Hadley Woods, provide rich opportunities for children to learn beyond the classroom. Whether exploring seasonal changes, observing wildlife, solving real-life problems or developing physical skills outdoors, children benefit from memorable first-hand experiences that enrich every area of the curriculum.
Alongside developing strong foundations in reading, writing and mathematics, we place great emphasis on children's communication, independence, creativity, wellbeing and personal development, ensuring they leave Reception as confident, capable learners who are ready for the next stage of their education.
By the End of Reception at Livingstone, Our Children Are...
Confident Communicators
Children listen attentively, ask thoughtful questions, engage in meaningful conversations and confidently use a rich vocabulary to express their ideas, experiences and emotions.
Happy, Resilient Individuals
Children develop strong personal, social and emotional skills. They manage their own needs, build positive relationships, show kindness and respect, and approach new challenges with confidence, independence and resilience.
Active and Healthy Learners
Children understand the importance of being active and enjoy developing their physical skills. They demonstrate strength, balance and coordination, move confidently in a variety of ways, ride a bicycle, and use tools and equipment safely and with increasing precision.
Enthusiastic Readers and Writers
Children develop a genuine love of books and stories. They read words and simple sentences with confidence using their phonics knowledge and begin to write recognisable letters, words and simple sentences that communicate meaning clearly.
Confident Mathematicians
Children develop a secure understanding of numbers to 10, confidently subitise, recognise patterns, compare quantities, recall number bonds to 5 and use mathematical language to describe shape, space and measure.
Curious Explorers
Children develop a fascination with the world around them. They investigate, observe and ask questions about nature, history and different cultures, making connections through meaningful experiences in school, our local community and the wider world.
Creative Thinkers
Children express themselves confidently through art, music, dance, storytelling and imaginative play. They explore a range of materials and media with creativity and purpose, developing their own ideas and celebrating their individuality.
Learning Beyond the Classroom
At Livingstone, learning doesn't stop at the classroom door. Every day, children have opportunities to explore our wonderful outdoor learning environment, develop their imagination through open-ended play, investigate nature in our pond and wildlife area, and experience the changing seasons in Hadley Woods.
These experiences encourage curiosity, independence, teamwork, resilience and a lifelong appreciation of the natural world.

A Smooth Transition to Year 1
By the end of Reception, our children have developed the confidence, knowledge and independence needed for a successful transition into Key Stage 1. They leave Reception as enthusiastic learners who are ready to embrace new challenges, think creatively, work collaboratively and continue their learning journey with confidence.
