March Week 2

Friday 13th March

Happy Mother's Day!

Thank you to the amazing group of parents who helped with the Mother’s Day Stall. They shopped, wrapped, and sold over the two days, making it possible for our pupils to choose something special for their Mum, Carer and Grandmother. We are very lucky to have a dedicated team of helpers. Happy Mother's Day !

Red Nose Day - Next Friday!

We’re excited to share that next week is Red Nose Day, and we’ll be joining in the fun with a day full of smiles and giggles.

On Friday, pupils should come to school in their usual uniforms, but they are warmly encouraged to add a splash of Red Nose Day spirit by wearing red nose accessories - including the classic red noses!

As part of the celebration, we are inviting every child to:

🎉 Donate £1 via Arbor School Shop from today.

This donation will go towards supporting the brilliant charities linked to Red Nose Day.

😂 Prepare a joke to tell.

Each pupil should have a joke ready to share with their class staff. The staff will choose their favourites, and those pupils will have the exciting opportunity to tell their jokes in a special Red Nose Day assembly next Friday.

We are also delighted to announce that Joe Bor - comedian, author and father of Levi and Milo - will be joining us during the assembly to share some of the funny stories he has written. It promises to be a wonderfully entertaining event for everyone!

Nursery

This week has been very busy in Nursery! The children have been enjoying a variety of activities linked to our story Ness the Nurse and Science Week.

We spent time looking at and describing different animals, as well as matching animal halves together. The children showed great observation skills and enjoyed talking about the animals they recognised.

Our role-play area turned into a vet surgery, where the children pretended to look after animals. They carefully wrapped bandages around the animals and talked about how to help them feel better. It was lovely to see their imagination and caring behaviour during this activity.

In our cooking activity, the children made colourful healthy rice using a selection of vegetables. They practised their communication and language skills by asking for the ingredients they wanted. Many children tried new vegetables including parsnips, carrots, corn, and peas. It was wonderful to see them exploring new tastes!

We also enjoyed reading Ness the Nurse together and singing “Miss Polly Had a Dolly”, using our Makaton signs to support the song.

The children worked very hard creating beautiful Mother’s Day cards. We hope you enjoy them!

We would like to wish all our families a very Happy Mother’s Day and hope you have a lovely weekend together.

Talking Homework

You can spend some time talking with your child about:

  • Animals and how we look after them
  • What a doctor, nurse, or vet does to help people and animals
  • Healthy foods and vegetables they like to eat

Kingfisher Early Years & Nurture

Another action packed week in Kingfisher and Bluebirds!

In Bluebirds we completed our Bear Hunt themed activities, the children made a beautiful sensory board and some bear faces in Fun with Food.

In Kingfisher we have just started our core text for this half tern: Nurse Ness. She will look after you if you are hurt and need a plaster. We have been putting plasters on ourselves and each other.

Our Makaton Nursery rhyme of the week is "Miss Polly had a Dolly," watch and sign along: https://www.youtube.com/ watch?v=EjY-M1m5Pl0 .

The children have been making cards for a special someone, please look out for them in their school bags, and they have enjoyed choosing gifts from the stall.

Reception

Reception have had a very eggciting week this week. On Monday, we had 5 eggs delivered to us and we didn't know what would hatch out of them. The children loved making predictions and guessing what animals they could be. On Wednesday morning, the children came into school and were so surprised that overnight, one of the eggs hatched! They were greeted by 1 cute little duckling. Throughout the day, 2 more eggs hatched and we were SO lucky to watch them hatch live! Last night, 1 more hatched, so now we have 4 very cute and very fluffy ducklings. Next week, we will continue to learn all about ducklings and we might even get to hold them!

Have a lovely restful weekend.

Year 1

In Maths, we have started our new unit on place value, focusing on numbers up to 50. The children have been practising counting forwards and backwards, writing numbers in numerals and words, and partitioning numbers into tens and ones. In English, we created a story map for Croc and Bird and used it to help us write our own versions of the story. Year 1 have made excellent progress with their writing. We are very proud of them! In D.T, the children designed and created their own moving mechanisms, where they were able to demonstrate their creativity and problem solving skills. Also, to celebrate 'Science Week' we had lots of fun making our own boats out of different materials to which boats floated and why.

Homework

  • Pages 65 and 66

This week's awards go to Evelin for her lovely retelling of 'Croc and Bird' and Ollie for his crafty skills and wonderful creativity in D.T.

In English, we completed our 'long write' which was a diary entry in role as Mrs Armitage. In the afternoons, we are learning about 'Animals, including Humans'. We have learnt about the basic needs of survival and the importance of exercise and food. Year 3

The Year 3 children had a wonderful experience going on a 'rock hunt' around the school grounds. We then classified the rocks according to their properties. We have also set up an experiment to find out what soil is made of. I wonder what we will discover . . .

In English we analysed a WAGOLL as inspiration to plan our own trick that the Twits play on each other. We look forward to writing our narratives next week. We continued to explore fractions in Maths and discussed when we would use fractions in real life.

Homework:

Maths: p.64 - 66 (p.67 is optional)

English comprehension: p.26 and 27

Please remember to bring in your accelerated reader books on Fridays as we have noticed several children haven't done their quizzes and have not returned their books.

Year 4

This week, Year 4 have continued with fractions in Maths and have revised present perfect tense, fronted adverbials and using apostrophes correctly in preparation for their diary entry writing next week. It has also been Science Week so the children completed an experiment to decide whether a fruit or vegetable's appearance affects the taste. In Computing, they learned how to recognise fake news and misinformation, and also created a Year 5 newsletter using Microsoft Sway.

This week in Year 6, we have been learning about translations and reflections in Maths, developing our understanding of how shapes can be moved and described on a grid.

In English, the children have been writing reassuring letters in role as Olive to her mum, based on Letters from the Lighthouse. They worked hard to show empathy and understanding through their writing.

In the afternoons, we have begun our Science unit on evolution and inheritance, exploring how living things change over time and how characteristics can be passed from one generation to the next.

I would also like to say a huge well done to Year 6 for their fantastic performance at the Barnet Dance Festival. They should be exceptionally proud of themselves. A big thank you to Emma from Non-Stop Action for her excellent choreography, and to Mrs Church, Diane and Mrs Cavozzi for all their help and support.
