April Week 3

Friday 17th April

Welcome Back to the Summer Term!

Welcome back everyone! We hope you all had a wonderful Easter break, filled with plenty of rest, family time, and of course lots of chocolate. This half term promises to be a busy and exciting one, with many events to look forward to, finishing with our much‑anticipated Picnic Day at the end of the half term.

This is also a very important time for our Year 6 pupils as they prepare to smash their SATs. We are incredibly proud of their hard work and determination and wish them the very best of luck.

We have some fantastic trips planned across the school, including a visit to Buckingham Palace for Year 1, a trip to the farm for Reception and an exciting outing to Hertfordshire Zoo for Kingfisher class. Sporting events are also in full swing, with two girls’ football cup finals, Copthall athletics, tag rugby festivals and a cricket competition all coming up this term.

Finally, we would like to send our very best wishes to Mrs Mills as she prepares for the exciting arrival of her baby. This is such a special time, and we know the whole school community will join us in wishing her and her family happiness, health and lots of precious moments together. Mrs Mills will be greatly missed while she is away, but we cannot wait to meet the newest member of her family and look forward to welcoming her back in the future.

We’re looking forward to a fantastic half term ahead!

Nursery

We’ve had such a lovely start to the new term in Nursery. The children have come back full of enthusiasm and it has been wonderful to see them settle straight back into their routines. This week we also welcomed some new little friends, and the children have been absolutely fantastic buddies, showing kindness, patience and lots of gentle encouragement as they helped them explore their new environment.

This term we are beginning our topic on life cycles. We started with the life cycle of a caterpillar, and the children were incredibly excited to meet our real-life caterpillars. They have already begun observing them closely and noticing how they grow bigger and bigger each day. We will continue to watch their transformation over the coming weeks, which is always such a magical experience for the children.

We have been reading The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle and using the story to explore days of the week, counting, fruit names and colours. The children have enjoyed retelling the story, sequencing the events and joining in with the repeated phrases.

We have also begun phonics sessions with the children who will be moving to Reception in September. This week we learned the sound m, using the phrase “Maisie, mountain, mountain” to help with formation and recall.

Talking Homework:

You might like to chat with your child about the days of the week and what happens on each one in your family routine. You could also look around the house together for things beginning with the sound /m/ or ask your child to retell the story of the caterpillar and what it ate on each day. If you’re out and about, see if you can spot any insects or caterpillars and talk about what they might grow into.

Kingfisher Early Years & Nurture

Welcome back to Summer 1, we hope you had an enjoyable and restful spring break!

This is another action packed 6 weeks coming up. We have already welcomed in some tiny, crawly visitors who are already showing signs of being very hungry caterpillars. This is our text for the next two weeks in Kingfisher EYFS. The children have enjoyed counting fruits, colouring and painting all the things the caterpillar ate and retelling the story in their own ways. They have also made their own fruit salads and some even tried them. Our Nursery rhyme this week is: There's a tiny caterpillar on a leaf.

In Bluebirds this week our key text is Oi Frog and much of our work and has been frog themed. We have been learning about their life cycle, counting, crafting and colouring them. This week in Fun with food we made delicious 'frog cakes' and 'guacamole frog faces' which were great fun!

Reception

Reception have had such a fantastic first week back after the holidays. They have really shown Mrs Feshias the best of them with their great behaviour and attitudes towards their learning. They have shown amazing kindness, respect for the rules and routines, great phonics and impressive writing. The children are beginning to grow in confidence and independence which has been lovely to see. They have got a very exciting term ahead of them with trips, stories and preparation for their future! Miss Edwards is back next week and will be there to welcome your children in next week alongside Mrs Feshias and Mrs Hinds.

They began by using cubes as a non-standard unit to measure different lengths and heights, before progressing to standard units using rulers and centimetres. In English, we read the poem If the World Was Crazy, which inspired the children to write their own creative and imaginative poems and performed them. In History, we have begun our topic on Kings and Queens, focusing on King Charles III and Queen Elizabeth II. The children have shown great interest and enthusiasm in learning about the monarchy.

Important Trip Information.

If you stated on the permission form that you are meeting us at Cockfosters station, please arrive for 8:30am. If your child is going to Breakfast Club, please arrive at school for 8am so we can leave at 8:20am. Your child must wear their school uniform but they can wear trainers. Please provide a packed lunch and water in a hands-free bag (backpack). We are aiming to return to the train station for 2:30pm. If you are picking your child up from Cockfosters, please meet us by the ticket office. If your child is going to Multisports or Cabin Club, they will be travelling back to school via minibus or car. Also, your child has been given a high vis jacket. Please wear this on Monday. Thank you! We are looking forward to the trip :)

Miss Gordon and I have been so impressed with their enthusiasm towards measuring and their curiosity towards learning about the Royal Family so we have decided that the award goes to the whole class :)

Year 2

Year 2 have had a very exciting start to the Summer term, with our class trip to the Transport Museum in London. We all had a great time learning about how modes of transport have changed over time from the omnibus to the electric buses and underground trains that we use today. Everyone was extremely engaged and participated in the various activities that we did. In Maths this week, we have been learning about capacity and volume and how to read the measurements of different cylinders. In English, we have been exploring features of a recount ready for our writing next week based on our class trip. In the afternoons, we have been learning about the history of transport in London using dated photos taken in High Barnet.

Kingfisher 1

It was lovely to have the children back at school and to hear all their wonderful news.

In maths, we focused on counting in 2s, 5s and 10s. The children practised making equal groups and enjoyed singing a song about how “equal means the same” to reinforce their understanding. They then progressed to creating their own equal groups in 2s, 5s and 10s.

In English, we continued our author study of Eric Carle by reading The Very Busy Spider. The children used colourful semantics to help them build sentences. We also explored how spiders make webs in real life, which the children found fascinating.

This week's achievement award goes to Dajjen for working so hard in maths and great reading!

Year 3

We began our week exploring drawing in art. We are learning how to draw using big shapes we see as well as shading techniques to show light and dark. We also explored the work of Max Ernst and created our own textured collages using the rubbings of a variety of different indoor and outdoor surfaces. In maths, we are continuing our work on capacity. In Engish, we read Revolting Recipes inspired by Roald Dahl and look forward to writing our own instructions in the weeks to come.

In English, the children have been using the picture book ‘The Journey’ as a stimulus for their next long write for which they will be using their imagination to create a world behind a secret door.

In History, Year 4 have begun to learn about the Romans and how they have influenced modern day Britain.

On Tuesday 21st April, Year 4 will be going to Cuffley Camp to partake in wall climbing. Year 5

It's been a good first week back after the Easter holidays!

In Maths, the children learned about angles and began learning how to use a protractor to measure angles accurately.

In English, we read two new texts: The Highwayman and Pig Heart Boy. The Highwayman (a poem set in the 1700s) has captivated the children's interests with its themes of love and betrayal. They did drama based on the poem and analysed romantic letters between the thief and his beloved Bess.

In DT, we are learning about bread. This week they analysed the nutritional value of breads, tasted eight different ones, and practised following a recipe to see the effects of kneading and proofing dough. They are excited to bake their own loaves next week.

Netball Competition

Our netball club has worked incredibly hard throughout the year with Mrs Craddock and Mrs Church, and it was wonderful to see this dedication shine in our recent competition. Children from Years 5 and 6 took part, with each team playing four matches. The progress in both skill and strategic play has been fantastic, resulting in a mixture of outcomes, with many well earned wins. We were particularly impressed with how the children conducted themselves, showing excellent teamwork and representing the school so positively. Well done to Well done to Sienna, Lexi, Alya, Ryan, Edward, Scarlett, Ryann, Xhizela, Holly, Ellis, Yvette, Eva, Taha and Amelia.

PTA Funding Impact

A huge thank you to our incredible PTA and all the parents who give their time, energy and support so generously. Whether through volunteering, donations or contributions, every effort has helped shape and enhance our school.

What you see here is the result of years of support - funding everything from stage lighting and minibuses to the Mini MUGA and outdoor spaces the children enjoy every day. These opportunities enrich their school experience, and we are incredibly lucky to have such a supportive community.
