Rugby Festival

On Monday, our whole rugby team got to take part in a T1 Rugby Festival. It was a great opportunity to show case their skills from training with Mr Boucon. Both teams played brilliantly with many wins and one team even went undefeated throughout the whole day. At the event, they also met with Poppy Cleall who plays Rugby Union and has had 74 caps for England. The children left feeling inspired!

Well done to Ellis, Amelia, Eva, Alyla, Scarlett, Daniella, Sienna, Anwen, Elsie, Soroiyan, Zak, Dotty, Kevin and Holly.

Nursery

This week in Nursery we have had a very busy and exciting time exploring our topic of Life Cycles. Our focus book has been The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle, which the children have thoroughly enjoyed listening to and retelling.

We have also been learning a fun focus rhyme: “There’s a hungry caterpillar on a leaf, wiggle wiggle!”

The children have been busy creating their own days of the week caterpillar calendar, helping them to sequence the story and build their understanding of time. They have shown great enthusiasm when retelling the story in their own words.

To support their fine motor skills, the children enjoyed a fun activity feeding the hungry caterpillar by posting different fruits through its mouth. This helped develop their hand-eye coordination and finger strength.

For children who are preparing to start Reception in September, we have continued with phonics this week. The children learned:

‘a’ for apple and ‘s’ for snake

If you would like to support your child at home, please encourage them to practise writing these sounds. It would also be very helpful to reinforce the rhymes we use at school, using the Read Write Inc. sheet that was sent home in their bookbags on Tuesday.

Talking Homework:

Please spend some time talking with your child about the story. You could ask:

What did the caterpillar eat? What happened on each day of the week? How did the caterpillar change at the end of the story?

You might also like to look for caterpillars or butterflies outside and talk about how they grow and change.

Kingfisher Early Years & Nurture

This week we have continued with our Spring themes. Both classes have been avidly watching the caterpillars growing.

Kingfisher Early Years have continued to read The Very Hungry Caterpillar and continued exploring the delicious fruits that were eaten. They have enjoyed smelling, cutting and tasting the different fruits as well as counting and making them out of playdough. The Nursery rhyme of the week is 'there's a tiny caterpillar on a leaf' the children have joined in with the words and Makaton signs.

In Bluebirds we have been learning about different minibeasts including bees and ladybirds. They have enjoyed the colourful rhyming book, Mad about Minibeasts as well as looking at a variety of information books.

This week in Fun with Food they made bee biscuits and decorated bread with food colouring to look like different minibeasts.

The sensory story this week was Freddy the Frog.

Reception

The class have settled so well following Mrs Mills going on maternity leave, and it’s been really lovely to see their confidence continue to grow. I’ve really enjoyed getting to know them all and am looking forward to finishing the year together.

This week in Reception, we have started our focus on traditional tales with The Three Little Pigs. The children have been fully immersed in the story, making their own playdough characters and lollipop stick puppets, which they’ve used in their role play. They’ve also been exploring building houses using sticks, bricks and straw, and have discovered just how tricky it can be to make something strong and stable! Some of the children used their creativity and imagination to design and build bigger houses where all three pigs could live together. We’ve been really impressed with their independence too, particularly when creating their own speech bubble writing using key words and captions from the story.

We’re looking forward to building on this story and developing their ideas further next week.

This week our awards go to…

Humza, for independently using his fantastic phonic knowledge to write his own sentence and choosing to challenge himself!

Kiaan, for using his problem-solving skills and showing perseverance to successfully build a house out of sticks that was strong enough to withstand our huffing and puffing!

Tomoru, for using his creativity and construction skills to design and build a bridge to cross a river, showing fantastic focus and sustained attention throughout.

Year 1

We had a fantastic start to the week with our class trip to the Royal Mews, where we learnt all about coronations. The children were curious, engaged and eager to ask questions throughout the day. We enjoyed seeing the impressive carriages and horses, as well as catching a glimpse of Buckingham Palace. A real highlight was watching the Royal Guards ride their horses down The Mall. The children were absolutely brilliant and we were very impressed with how they represented our school.

In Maths, we are measuring mass/weight where we used balancing scales to compare the mass of different objects. In English, we finished writing our poem 'If the World was Crazy' and we wrote a recount about our trip.

Homework

Maths- 79 and 80.

This week's awards go to Yoan for his hard work in all our lessons and Salma for her curiosity and knowledge about the Royal Family.

Year 2

This week in Year 2 in Maths, we begun our new unit all about fractions where we have learnt about parts and wholes and equal and unequal parts. We have worked tremendously hard on our 'long write' which was a recount in the form of a letter all about our school trip to The Transport Museum. We have finished our History unit about 'Transport' and have started our new Art unit called 'Life in Colour'. We mixed primary and secondary colours using paint and we also learnt about how texture can be created with paint.

Homework

Maths: pages 81 and 82 (page 83 optional challenge but have a go!)

English: nouns and noun phrases sheet.

The first achievement award goes to Gina for her fantastic attitude and focus during our 'long write' this week. The second goes to Vinny for always showing positive behaviour for learning and such great enthusiasm in Art.

Maths

In maths this week, we have been learning about fractions, focusing on one quarter. The children explored how four equal parts make one whole by putting together four pieces, sharing equally, and drawing their ideas. They also took part in practical activities to develop their understanding and practised finding one quarter through equal sharing.

English

In English, we continued our author study on Eric Carle. This week, we read The Bad-Tempered Ladybird. The children retold the story through role play and used colourful semantics to describe the characters and the main events.

This week's award goes to Roman for completing his sticker chart.

Well done Roman!

Year 3

Year 3 had a fantastic time practising our orienteering and climbing skills at Cuffley Camp at the start of the week. We continued our work on mass and capacity in maths. In English, we learnt all about imperative verbs, adverbs and prepositional phrases in preparation for writing our own set of instructions next week. We completed our Art topic of drawing with a final colourful abstract piece inspired by the artist Georgia O'Keeffe.

Our first achievement award goes to Lou for her excellent instructions in English. Our second achievement award goes to Sienna for her brilliant Georgia O'Keefe inspired art work.

Year 4

It has been a busy week for Year 4. In Maths, the children have continued with decimals and money, and in English the children have been practising show not tell sentences and fronted adverbials which will fit in with their own world for their creative narratives.

In amongst the Romans in History, the children were fantastic at Cuffley camp and made us very proud by pushing their boundaries in the climbing and partaking in trials for Copthall.

Homework

Maths - pages 87 and 88

English - pages 34 and 35

Year 5

This week in Maths, the children learned how to calculate missing angles on a straight line and around a point.

In English, they practised the grammar they'll be using next week to write romantic letters based on The Highwayman: conjunctions, metaphors and using language from the poem itself.

In DT, they planned a loaf of bread for their partner and today was a busy day preparing the dough, scoring the top, baking, tasting and evaluating the loaves.

Reminder: please complete the form about the Music Festival. Any places not taken up by Y5 will be offered to members of the choir on Monday.

Homework due by Weds 29th April

Maths: pages 90 and 91 (angles)

Year 6

This week in Year 6, we have been recapping key topics in Maths and English, consolidating our knowledge and building confidence across a range of skills.

In the afternoons, we have started our Geography unit on South America and the Amazon Rainforest. So far, we have explored the climate, biomes, countries and capital cities, as well as the different layers of the rainforest.
