Writing at Livingstone

Writing

Writing is a life skill, and is of the utmost of importance. Our writing curriculum has been designed to inspire pupils to write for a wide range of purposes and genres, including real-life audiences. Opportunities to write fiction, non-fiction and poetry are included.

Writing at Livingstone

At Livingstone, we give pupils opportunities to write in a creative way using a wide range of high-quality texts as a stimulus. For pupils in Years 2 to 6, each half term a new text is studied and brought to life through daily English lessons, following a ‘Talk for Writing’ approach.

First, a text is explored and analysed through story-mapping, drama activities and language studies. Once pupils have a good understanding of the text, they begin to look at the purpose and audience of the genre by focusing on the language, sentence structures and grammar. After this, the text is used as a stimulus for whole-class, paired and independent writing while following the writing process: planning, drafting, editing, improving, presenting and evaluating. The pupils' writing is 'published' in their blue writing folder, which follows them throughout their time at Livingstone.

From Year 2, we use the ‘Read Write Inc Spelling’ programme to teach spelling in a fun interesting way (with the help of three alien friends!) The children have opportunities to recap words from their previous unit and words from the National Curriculum, as well as special focuses like homophones. Some of the activities include learning new spelling rules; adding prefixes and suffixes to root words; how to spell sounds in different ways (such as or, oor, ore); and dictation / team teach to assess the children's progress.
