June Week 1

Friday 5th June

Rugby

This week, our rugby team had the once in a lifetime opportunity to visit the home of England Rugby, the Allianz Stadium (formerly Twickenham), to take part in a day of T1 Rugby.

The children enjoyed a range of rugby activities during the morning before competing in a series of matches in the afternoon. Not only did they represent the school brilliantly, but they also went the entire day unbeaten. Very few children can say they have had the chance to play rugby at the home of England Rugby and to do so without losing a game is an incredible achievement.

As part of the day, the children were also given the incredible opportunity to tour the England Rugby team's changing rooms and explore some of the stadium's world-class facilities. It was a real highlight and gave them a fascinating insight into what it is like behind the scenes at one of the country's most iconic sporting venues.

The children had a fantastic time and created memories that I am sure will stay with them for many years to come. It was hard to tell who was more excited - the children, Mr Madle or me (Mr Boucon)!

Unsupervised Early Arrivals

We have noticed that a number of pupils who come in independently, arriving at school earlier than expected and congregating outside the school gates or on the green near the Cabin.

While pupils are welcome to wait quietly, some have been using it as an extension of playtime and running in and out of the gate and impeding parents and carers dropping off children at Cabin. This has also led to members of staff having to deal with behaviour incidents involving pupils who are unsupervised for extended periods.

To ensure the safety and wellbeing of all pupils, we ask that children do not arrive too far in advance of the start of the school day and that they behave responsibly while waiting.

Barnet Youth Summer 2026 Magazine

As the school year comes to an end and the summer holidays begin, Barnet Youth are excited to bring you a packed programme of activities for children, young people and families across Barnet.

Barnet Medieval

The annual Barnet Medieval Festival is taking place this weekend at Lewis Ice Cream Farm in Galley Lane, Barnet. This is a lovely day out for the family. There will be re- enactments of battles, a 15th Century fashion show, medieval music, equestrian events, and lots more. This year for the first time there will be a bird of prey display. There is a shuttle bus service from the back of The Spires Shopping Centre to the event.

Nursery

What a fun-filled week it has been in Nursery! The children returned full of life, smiles, and excitement after the half term. They were delighted to see their friends and teachers again, and we were so happy to welcome them back too!

This week, we have had some very special visitors in EYFS – pirates 🏴☠️! The children have been busy creating treasure maps, making sure that X marks the spot, and exploring all the treasure the pirates brought with them on their pirate ship.

Our pirate theme has helped us develop our counting skills as we counted all the way to ten using the stories 5 Little Pirates and 10 Little Pirates. The children have also enjoyed making oceans in a jar, creating pirate hats, and role-playing adventures aboard a pirate ship.

In phonics this week, we have been learning the sounds k for kite and u for umbrella.

We have had a wonderful week of learning and play and look forward to more exciting adventures next week!

Talking Homework

As part of our pirate adventures this week, please spend some time talking together about one of the following questions:

  • If you were a pirate, what treasure would you search for and why?
  • What would you name your pirate ship?
  • If you could make a treasure map, where would your treasure be hidden?
  • What might you see, hear, and feel while sailing on the ocean?
  • Can you think of 5 things that begin with the sound k or u?

Kingfisher Early Years & Nurture

Welcome back to Summer 2, I hope you all had a lovely half term break and enjoyed the beautiful sunshine we had!

In Bluebirds our topic for this week and next is transport. Our key text is 'The Train Ride' and we have been going on our own sensory journeys through the week. The children have been learning about all different types of transport and making some of their own models. The have been counting, sorting and tracing all week long.

In Kingfisher Early years this week our topic has been 'On the Farm' and our key text, Farmyard Hullaballoo. The children have enjoyed the role play area and the farm themed sensory trays. The Makaton song of the week is, Old McDonald had a farm, they have been singing along and learning the signs.

The phonics sounds for this week are 'k' for kangaroo and please try to notice these sounds in your environment.

Reception

We’ve had a fantastic week in Reception!

The children were thrilled to find our home corner had transformed into a pirate ship, sparking lots of imaginative play as captains, sailors, and mermaids.

We’ve begun our Pirates and Mermaids topic, creating pirate names, writing messages in bottles, and drawing treasure maps.

In Maths, we used treasure jewels to explore number bonds and part-whole models, with great progress in independent recording.

The role-play and small-world areas have been full of teamwork, creativity, and rich storytelling—we’ve loved seeing their ideas come to life!

Beanstalk Update

Talking Homework

  • Can you create your own pirate name at home? What special pirate skill would you have?
  • Talk about how pirates might find hidden treasure. What clues would they need?
  • Draw a simple treasure map and explain the route to a family member.
  • Practise number bonds to 10 using objects at home such as toys, coins or pieces of pasta.
  • Imagine you found a message in a bottle washed up on the beach. What would it say?

Year 1

Year 1 have had a fantastic first week back at school. In Maths, we have been learning about fractions. The children have been recognising and finding halves of shapes and quantities, and have also begun identifying quarters. We have enjoyed using practical resources to help us understand these new concepts. In English, we have been reading The Balloon Tree. The children took part in role-play activities to explore the story and the characters, and we focused on asking and answering questions using question marks correctly.

In Science, we have started our learning about the seasons, with a particular focus on summer. Although the weather this week has not quite matched our expectations of summer, the children have enjoyed discussing the changes we typically see at this time of year. As part of our Creative Curriculum, Year 1 have also been taking part in Music lessons which they enjoyed this week.

Year 2

In Maths, we have started our new unit on Time. We started by revisiting previous learning by ordering the days of the week and months of the year. We have also been using small analogue clocks to show and tell times using the vocabulary o'clock, half past, quarter past and quarter to. In English, we have started our new writing unit about instructional texts and introduced the key text George's Marvellous Medicine by Roald Dahl. We have explored the characters of Grandma and George using freeze frames and identified the layout features of an instructional text. In the afternoons, we have continued with our Science unit about Plants by observing how our beans in their hydroponics systems had grown over the half term as well as setting up a new investigation exploring what conditions cress seeds need to grow.

The first achievement award is to Isabelle for sharing her knowledge about telling the time in class.

Kingfisher 1

It was lovely seeing the children after half term and hearing all their news.

In Maths this week, the children have been counting in 10s, 50s and 100s. They practised finding missing multiples of 10 on a number line and sorted odd and even numbers using a ten frame.

In English, we read The Tiger Who Came to Tea. The children enjoyed role-playing the story, and we even had our very own tea party. Using Colourful Semantics, the children retold the story and practised creating sentences.


This weeks awards goes to Sergio and Stylianos for completing their sticker charts.

Year 3

Ms. Burnett and I can't believe we are in the final term of Year 3! We had a wonderful week exploring textiles. We learnt about the importance of being sustainable and were inspired by Max Alexander, a 9 year old fashion designer who even exhibited at Paris Fashion Week. After listening and watching closely, we all had a go at running and backing stitch to join materials together. The children enjoyed the designing process and we look forward to sewing our bags on Monday. We would be most appreciative of any parent/ grandparent volunteers who can join us and lend their hands! We reckon it will take most of the day, so you can come to Year 3 at 9:00am or 1:30pm. In Maths, we continue to work on time. Try to have a look at analogue and digital clocks at home and ask your children to tell you the time. In English, we researched Tobago on our laptops and made our own TV adverts to persuade viewers to go on holiday there. We look forward to planning and writing our travel brochures next week.

Year 4

It has been a very busy week in Year 4. The children have been learning about angles in Maths and exploring our new text The Firework-Maker's Daughter in English where they will be putting all their best persuasive techniques into action within a written advert.

In D&T, the children have explored different dips (yogurt and chickpea based) using their senses in order to design and create their own, next week. Many said they tried a dip for the first time and would be asking you to buy them for them at home.

We were very lucky with the weather on Thursday for our trip to the Verulamium and the children had the opportunities to look at artifacts and try to discern what they were used for.

Year 5

This week in Maths, the children practised subtracting decimals and are now experts in drawing diagrams to prove their calculations.

In English, they learned about balanced arguments needing to be unbiased so that the reader can make up their own mind about a topic. They analysed a good example and sorted statements into for and against about Cameron's xenotransplant operation.

They started learning about The Tudors in History, which they are all really enjoying. They looked at the Tudor family tree to see who the monarchs were; they studied explorers and exploration; and they learned about Elizabeth I's rivalry with her cousin, Mary Queen of Scots.

Trip reminder: the children need a packed lunch for Tuesday's trip and weather-appropriate accessories e.g. coat, sunhat. It is optional to bring spending money for the gift shop.

Music Festival reminder: the children will be eating lunch earlier on Thursday but will have their normal school- provided meal or packed lunch. For dinner, please see this week's message from the school office. The children need to be in their smartest correct uniform (including a jumper or cardigan) - no fleeces, leggings or inappropriate shoes please.

Year 6

What a busy week we've had in Year 6!

This week, we enjoyed our trip to Chessington. Despite the long journey and a spell of wet weather in the afternoon, the children had an amazing time and were able to experience some of the country's biggest and most exciting roller coasters. We certainly have a class full of thrill-seekers!

We have also begun our journey towards our Year 6 production of Bugsy Malone. The children have had the opportunity to audition for their roles and read through the script for the first time. There is already a real buzz of excitement, and we can't wait to see the show come together over the coming weeks.

Music Festival reminder: the children will be eating lunch earlier on Thursday but will have their normal school- provided meal or packed lunch. For dinner, please see this week's message from the school office. The children need to be in their smartest correct uniform (including a jumper or cardigan) - no fleeces, leggings or inappropriate shoes please.

Kingfisher 2

This week in Maths we have been practising different methods for addition and subtraction. We have looked at using number lines and formal written methods. We enjoyed using our methods to solve word problems about us.

In English, we have looked at features of diaries and practised orally recounting our trip to Hertfordshire zoo. We also completed some grammar work focusing on conjunctions.

We loved meeting Enzo's pets this week and even got to hold the leaf insects. They were adorable!
